I make my foam and cut into horizontal strips

from each strip i then cut vertical strips, each vertical strip then is used for a hopper.

I then tie to shank and may trim head and but to round them off. I have not noticed any difference in productivity in square head/but vs. rounded head/but hoppers. It is a time saving vs. looks decision.

two more things:

marshalls / tj max has what i think is their generic version of under armor called ‘8’. you can get all sorts of compression shirts ls and ss, cold gear, half zips etc. most are under $14. granted they are most likely not made with the quality and concience of a patagonia base layer, they work and they are wallet friendly (these stores also sell the heat packs for gloves and boots with ~ 20 units in one package for about $5.

if you have not already realized, i’m a huge fan of the marshalls and tj max.

as for the stick on heat pads, i spent the pm today in the ER due to a major neck muscle(s) spasm. i’ve got the ben gay one on my neck right now and its warm and toasty. i’d put this on my calves if i were to wade in winter for chrome or co. trout.

I was asked for this one today by wife’s co worker

Buffalo Wing Dip

• 2 packages cream cheese
• 2 chicken breasts
• Handful of blue cheese
• bottle of texas pete or other buffalo wing sauce (<-- forgot this ingredient) 1. poach chicken breasts – season water with salt and pepper, maybe boulion cube (save liquid as stock for rice below)
2. shred or dice chicken into sugar cube size bits
3. place cream cheese, chicken, blue cheese, and bottle of hot sauce in crock pot and wait till it melts, stir so chicken doesn’t settle to bottom
4. serve with fritos, Tostitos scoops, bread, crackers, etc
5. some like the blue cheese and celery sticks on side.

Beergarita (2x ingredients for more people)
3 bottles bud lime
1 can frozen limeade
1 cup tequila
bit of tripple sec

on the subject of gloves and iced guides, what about a glove with a small ice scraper built onto it so you could run your hand up and down the guides and break off the ice. no more teeth, hemostats, frozen fingers doing the work.

something like this:

but smaller and attached to a part of the glove where it won’t get in the way (my friend has one on his left ski glove to scrape ice off his ski mask)

or one of these to go around finger but strong enough to break ice

north face merino something blend socks (they are at marshalls for $6 and i gave all my old smartwools to inlaws for the breck condo)

ex officio funderwear

base layer of patagonia silk weight
mid weight orvis galatin green or smartwool or 686 (picked them up at the ski chalet here, terribly comfortable)
heavyweight of redington stirups or orvis galatin blue or orvis bibs

1 layer for fishing with air temps in the 40’s and not wading (think spring creeks)

2 layers for days in the low 40’s or mid to upper 30’s

3 layers for single digits or teens while wading

i wear a pair of ex officio pants b/w waders and layers to hold wallet. tom has no issues wearing his bibs with crocs and going into a gas station. thats always a funny scene.

if not a heating element, then something (like a ring of toothbrush bristles) that would remove water from the tip top guide as line is pulled through (that would not effect line speed going in or out) and prevent water from coming in contact with the guides in the first place.

this thing would most likely freeze and would have to be de-iced. i’d rather have one frozen than half a dozen

I have a north face nuptse down vest when fishing -instead of fleece. The reasons I purchased this vest:

• it zips into my marmot shell
  when worn under shell or kayak dry top, it keeps my torso warm but allows my arms freedom of movement (any vest will do that)
  it compresses
  its very warm (700 fill?)
  i got a great price on it
  the waist cinches to keep out a draft (my fleece vest(s) don’t
  it is very lightweight
  fleece gets stinky

there are much better ones out there now that are much warmer and less puffy (think george from seinfeld)

I’ve been using a north face bag since March and have been quite pleased. It has plenty of bells and whistles (such as a fold out pad for sitting on rocks).
