Had a great trip. Jim, sorry I couldn’t respond, I don’t have my password to log on with my ipod.
I stopped by Mad River Outfitters and they sent me to the lower Chagrin River. Picked up some tying material as gratitude for their info.
I spent about 5 hours fishing in a cold rain on the 27th. Didn’t see any live fish, just a dead one on the shore.
The water was off color. I probably lost 2 dozen flies on the shale bottom.

As soon as I pulled out of the lot the rain turned to silver dollar sized snow flakes. I passed ‘What About Bob’s sub shop which was maybe 100 yards from the parking lot. Had one of the best sandwiches ever. Bread rivaled Paris.
Stopped by Chagrin River Outfitters on way home. Had a flock of turkreys fly over my car on the way there. Thats new.
They pointed me to another spot to fish but told me to hold off after the expected 4″ of snow melted the next day. Cozy shop. Picked up some more tying material as gratitude for the information. Snow really started to dump on my way out. Total white knuckle drive back
Spent Thursday looking at maps online and figuring out the new spot. Pulled out of C’bus about 0645 on Friday and got to the river around 10am.
I fished up and down for about 3 hours. Nothing. There was one good hole on a bend. There were three guys working it all morning. On my way back to the car I stopped there as they walked out of the hole. Tossed in a tequila sunrise popsicle and on the 5th cast hooked this fish:
My wife’s best friend’s dad gave me a pile of his father in law’s antique Russian fishing equipment. I got some sort of fly reel, all sorts of tiny hooks, and some crazy lead jigs in an old silver cigarette case.
I had one of the leaving guys return to take my picture.
After that I went back to Bobs to get a sandwich, had a beer in the lot with some fries and fished a little more.
Only saw 2 chrome-both on stringers. Lost more flies in this original spot from the other day. Figured I should stop why I was ahead.
It poured the entire ride back. Got back in just under 3 hours.
Can’t wait to go visit my in-laws again

Many thanks to all of those who sent me messages. With all the kid and dog stuff we are taking with us its looking like I’ll have little room for my gear. I’m going to take it and based on weather and river levels call it while in Ohio.
If the fishing sucks, at least I will have gotten another road trip in for the year, seen some parts of the country I’d prob never get to see, and eat at some dive on the way.
I’ll keep y’all posted.
Looking forward to this one. Don’t think I’ll have to twist the wife’s arm to go see it.
Hopefully it will be good for the fly fishing industry and increase sales and new anglers to the life style. Was hoping to see that from the Why film but it never materialized.

I was reading your blog while I was out there and came across it when I Googled ‘father daughter fly fishing’ to see if the Long Beach people submitted their pic to the newspaper as they stated. Small world.
It would be nice if Costa still made yellow polarized lenses. I met some guides from Mass. that only wear the Smith yellow ones. Made me wish I had a high quality pair of yellow lenses.
Looking forward to seeing what Flip Pallot’s line of Costas will look like. I almost got a pair of Chesney’s .
Wade’s (fish) is bigger. Saw the episode when he brought one to shore. Disgustingly big. What about that grouper thing he landed in Australia-the bait was kayaked out and dropped. The fish was as big as a VW beetle.
Steve Irwin died when he swam over a stingray that was buried in the sand. His chest was impaled by the stinger which broke off and lodged in his chest. He died as a result of removing the broken off stinger.

I feel bad for those around me on sunny days like today. They don’t get to see everything as vivid as I do. Colors are so much more vibrant, its an experience. Walking outside with them for the first time was like walking out of my house for the first time. It was all different. I put them on clients so they can test them and its always a profanity laced statement of awe.
I have two pairs. One of them broke and I could not wear what I thought were top of the line glasses from another company as I waited for my Costas to be repaired. I ended up ordering another pair to wear during the repair process.
The company even called me to go over the repair costs and details before I was charged, fixed, and shipped.
I was out today on an overpass looking down at carp, koi, and goldfish near the Potomac. It was cloudy and the water a little stained yet I could still make out all of the fish.
I prefer the green mirror amber lens over the plain amber lens. And get a good strap to keep them on.
I absolutely recommend them.
Just got back from Los Angeles. The feather hair extension and feather earrings are all over the place. Every fifth stand in Venice had them. And I got in trouble for photographing them. Still managed a few shots when the vendors were toking up.
Some had entire pheasant tails as an earring. That was a bit much/long.
If the fingertips start to burn and sting then I call it quits. If the wind is unbearable then I’ll usually bail. I can handle some cold (like your beer freezing in the can) but can’t deal with the windchill when its that cold.
Never seen a picture like that one before, trousicle.
Update:
Here is a pic from the Colorado River from a few year ago. It was cold out side ……(insert joke here) and I didn’t need a hook keep. Just put the wet zonker on the reel and it would freeze. It was too cold to keep a cigar lit too.
I’ve got an aluminum drift boat. Its roomy and can store all sorts of stuff.
The only negative about it so far is running over shallow spots and grinding against the bottom. That sound is awful.
Hitting a rock sucks too. Its super loud and everyone lunges forward.
We floated the Salmon River in Ny a few weeks ago and the river was 350cfs. I had to jump out and push the boat and rock it back and fourth as it dragged the bottom. Imagine nails on a chalkboard amplified.
Other than that the boat is indestructible, can be modified how ever I want based on a marina in Oregon that sells parts, can have an engine put on it, has all sorts of storage, and sits on the side of the shoulder of a big road here in metropolis with out a worry. Its got more room than a raft so I can get people in it with plenty of space, room in the back for a wheelchair if needed. Its rated for class 5 not that I would ever go down water like that.

My Patagonia water masters arrived last night. Very comfortable. Looking forward to the being able to write your name in the snow feature.

With reference to Zach’s comment, what is the deal with the tights? I’ve seen more than one NZ grip and grin shot with them blues on.
Just ordered a pair of watermasters the other day. I’m very excited.
I have been wearing Orvis pro guides for several years and am frustrated with the shoulder strap system-which keeps coming undone. I had to have anglers next to me re-attach them several times last night.
Never heard any complaints about Simms waders.
There was a grocery store in Charlottesville that sold picante beef and a picante chicken ramen when I was in college. I would stock up when I visited my brother there in college. Now I’ll get the random ones at the Asian grocery stores (our town is nick named Asiandale). They don’t compare to the ones from C’ville.
My favorite camping food is the chili mac with beef. Maybe from mountain house. Can’t remember. Its good enough to eat when at home. I never get to make anything too special, looks like I’m camping with the wrong people based on that above picture. :drool
I picked mine up on Craigslist for $130 with paddles. It is Northeast Outfitters (Dicks Sports Generic) and it floats. Its plastic, has 2 web mesh seats, and wood bars across.
It is nothing special, there are no bells and whistles to it. It floats, gets me to where I want to fish, it takes a beating on the rocks during our droughts, fits on my car roof-I can get it up there solo, and was inexpensive.
It is great for ponds and lakes. I’ll be taking it out in a few hours on a Potomac tidal creek. If you find one for that deal, take it.
My parents live across the street from the lake and I store it under their deck during the off season. On a side note, keeping a canoe on your car roof is one easy way to find
