I remember a post here a while back which discussed the largest fresh water fish species.

20 stones!  Wow, that’s bigger than I am.  I’m just a little over 16 stones.  I must admit, you would have to have some pretty large stones yourself to grab this thing by the tail.

While this is a big fish, I think some freshwater sturgeons get over 70 stones.  The IFGA record sturgeon is 33 stones.  The record freshwater fish is a Mekong giant catfish at 46 stones.

Is that how the crocodile hunter died?

What did we ever do before we could plug “stone to pounds” into Google and get a quick conversion?

It always drives me crazy that when I need a unit of measurement the most, it’s always given to me in the least accessible format.

According to my good friend Wikipedia, there was an Alligator Gar caught this year in the Mississippi that weighed 327 pounds (148 kg, 23+ Stones).  It was 8’5″ long, and looks like an awfully mean creature in this photo.

I think to answer your question, we’d need to clarify if we are looking for heaviest or longest or combo?? I’m not sure but i also think i’ve heard the mekong catfish are the largest.

Wade’s (fish) is bigger. Saw the episode when he brought one to shore. Disgustingly big. What about that grouper thing he landed in Australia-the bait was kayaked out and dropped. The fish was as big as a VW beetle.

Steve Irwin died when he swam over a stingray that was buried in the sand. His chest was impaled by the stinger which broke off and lodged in his chest. He died as a result of removing the broken off stinger.

In the Amazon basin there are a lot of fish that have the ability to electrocute their prey.

Speaking of the Amazon Basin, which is where I was born (Guyana), I was always told that arapaima were the biggest fresh water fish.

I think these are the biggest, after further review.  Not sure if they are exclusively freshwater or not.

    128 stones.
