MemberI promised myself I wouldn’t join another forum. I was pretty adamant about it too. But my resolve’s in tatters after browsing through the threads and photographs here.

So I suppose any decent introduction requires a little information about me. There’s one thing you need to know above all else. I like fly fishing. Quite a lot really. In fact it’s kinda taken over my life. Piscine pursuits aside, I’m in my fourth year of a double degree in law and history at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.

I’m a pretty keen cook and make a mean foccacia. I’ve been known to imbibe a beer or two, being particularly partial to IPAs and APAs.

I’m also slightly mad. Not clinically of course, but in an endearing eccentric fashion. Or so I like to think

For the last couple of years I’ve been shooting a lot of photos using an old Canon AE-1 film camera that was my dad’s pride and joy in its day. It was a hell of a learning curve, but now I absolutely love it.

Film just seems to capture some extra unquantifiable detail within the emotional sphere. Possibly it doesn’t, but that’s how I justify the costs of developing!

I’ll leave you with a couple of faces somewhat prettier than my own. That’s quite enough rambling from me.

The Itinerant AnglerNew Zealanders sure seem to love tights, but those are the first striped ones I’ve seen.

MemberMy flat survived both quakes astonishingly well. The biggest disruption for me personally came in the smaller June quakes, which happened during our study week. After the February quake I volunteered for a week with civil defence to lend a hand – to be honest I felt a little guilty that my place had so completely escaped damage.

Tim AngeliMemberNice fish Jack, and welcome. Â Was good meeting you down in Omori…hopefully we didn’t scare you too much. Â We tend to regress to not much better than cavemen when we all get together like that. Â

MemberDon’t worry Tim, I’m more than used to such reversions. It was great meeting you guys too – that DVD Paul lent us brought about more than its share of hilarity.
Dave – I may well get in touch with you about the AE-1 body. My current one has just started to leak quite a lot of light. I’ll see if I can remedy it, otherwise I’ll be in touch.

Memberwelcome jack; not sure on the striped pyjamas (they look like the uniforms in those old WWII German propaganda/calisthenics films) but the rest is outstanding…welcome aboard…

MemberI won’t apologise for the polyprops. The purple ones, in particular, are immensely lucky.

MemberWith reference to Zach’s comment, what is the deal with the tights? I’ve seen more than one NZ grip and grin shot with them blues on.
Sep 29, 2011 at 12:35 am #49926Jack Kos
MemberAn average day fishing for me involves walking 20-30km. I’m sure as heck not going to do that in waders! Polyprops dry quick, give you a little warmth when you’re in the water and a bit of protection from scratchy plants when you’re walking through the bush. But the biggest reason is to stop sandflies. Sandflies were birthed by satan after he stumbled upon on a sapphic orgy of harpies.
Plus, they’re obviously extremely fashionable. Milan just hasn’t caught on yet…

The Itinerant AnglerJack –
It really does seem like New Zealand is the one place where tights have caught on with fly fishermen; I had heard it said that because you guys are closer to Antarctica and its ozone hole, people burn quicker there and therefore regular sunscreen is not enough.

MemberHave you guys seen the Buff craze down there yet?
Sure have. I’m yet to get one myself as I think they look utterly ridiculous (this may seem rich coming from a man that wears tights…). However, I did borrow a friends for a trip into the depths of Fiordland and it was an utter godsend.
NZ certainly has a few holes in the ozone above us, but I’m not sure that’s the reason for the tights. It’s more the style of fishing that necessitates them.
P.s. Just got out of the west coast bush. One of the best opening trips I’ve ever had. Truly special. I’ll put some pictures up in the next few days.
