people who have to sit in front of those seasonal affective disorder lights should look at this series of pics instead.
(specifically to include Mark and J.T. since our weather here sucks this winter)
From conversations I’ve had its more of a ‘hey, i can do that’ idea after watching other sport films like warren miller’s (ski), kayakers going down huge waterfalls, surfers riding big waves etc.
It was a mostly untapped genre for fly fishing. Fishing films before ‘fish porn movies’ were about catching the big one, not about exotic places, fish, and adventure, while adding an artistic element (camera angles, music, scenic shots, different lenses, underwater views)
These films can be done on a budget. Prices have come down a lot in the technology involved such as HD portable cameras, editing software, etc. The films can be made in an apartment, not an editing studio. Warren Miller uses helicopters, whereas an angler can hike in or float a body of water to get their shots.
Add in the ability to share films over the internets gets them out to a lot of people very fast.
on a side note, i’d like to see a ‘menu’ of films at the film tour. no more scribbling down on a napkin.

however, i have seen the oliver edwards series and found it entertainingHave they started selling any of the movies at the shows? I never figured out why they didn’t sell them in the past years. It would be such a cash cow to have people watch the movies and then be able to buy them as they walk out. Our venue is also a bar so people would be a little saucey and more likely to spend $$.
DC metro one has been announced for end of March.
I have the Helios 8wt and suggest it financially possible. The rod’s weight is a feakish-abnormality.
I could not believe how light it was when I picked it up. That was the selling point.I have fished it for PacNW Salmon, Ny salmon + steelhead, Potomac fish, and Co trout. It can handle big fish and little fish don’t seem too small as compared to when I fished my 14′ two hander and hooked 10″ trout.
– The benefit of the bendable guides was not apparent until I fished in 8 degree temp last week. I didn’t have to worry about breaking guides when de-icing them.
– The thing effortlessly throws a lot of line and big flies with weight.
– Having a 4 piece rod helps on the airplane.
– I can mend line with ease, high stick etc with the 11+ feet.
– I can throw line or D loop the line based on my needs to get the fly to the fish with my surrounding.
– I’m not a fan of the uplocking reel parts, no hook keep, or the handle-less rod tube (i made a handle out of duct tape to attach to day pack) but those are minute complaints.
Still trying to sell a Redington 10′ 8wt to help pay for the Helios.

Caught a beautiful brown last week on the colorado on one of my tube flies. That had been a goal of mine for the year. I have confirmed they work

I try to take all my gear carry on, including vise and tying materials.
I’ve only had one thing confiscated and that was a pair of folding scissors from a lanyard.
I want to bring my big net with me to Colorado but I don’t think the airline would allow that.
Where you fly out of makes a difference too.
I have yet to hook a fish on one of my tubes. I have yet to encounter that.
I could tightly wrap the but section of the tube like a corset to prevent the eye moving up, or use a hook with a big eye. Trial and error will only tell.

and as for listening to music on the stream thread, i’ve become a fan of putting my itouch in the front pouch of my waders for the long walks to and from the car.
not the best image to help the above descriptions, but here is the same or similar fly in a vise with a circle  hook in the back end of the tube {edit) with mono going in the front.
as i’ve just gotten into these, i plan to make foam poppers for bass, streamers for stripers, smallies, and trout.
