MemberWhat is everyone wearing for insulation under your waders? Some type of fleece pant or maybe something like flannel lined Mountain Khakis? If you are wearing fleece pants, what kind are you wearing? Something from the Simms or Orvis lines or something else altogether?

The Itinerant AnglerOn a truly frigid day, I wear a pair of Patagonia Expedition Weight (fleece) long johns under a pair of Adidas polyester tearaway warmups (which are synthetic but pretty thick).

MemberSmartwool Light or Medium Socks
Underarmor 1.0 (when its not cold), 2.0 when it is
Pair of lightweight synthetic pants-Simms, REI, North Face, etc.Even in the coldest water–UA 2.0 and a pair of sythetic pants will keep you warm enough, even if you’ve got some leaks in your waders.

MemberI go with Patagonia Capilene 2 bottoms and a light synthetic pant if it is cool.

MemberI like to wear something tight up against the skin like an under armour or bike pant, and then a fleece on top of that. The biggest problem is getting to “little Willi” in time of need.
I also use foot warmers in between my two layers of socks. They help the feet. On the really cold days I will use one of those lower back heating pads you can that are like the foot warmers. Seems like the warmer my core is, the better off I am.
Take care of your neck too. A fleece neck warmers does wonders for me.

Eric WellerMemberDepending on how cold it is I always start with UA 2.0 then light weight fleece pants.

Memberlegs go like this:
north face merino something blend socks (they are at marshalls for $6 and i gave all my old smartwools to inlaws for the breck condo)
ex officio funderwear
base layer of patagonia silk weight
mid weight orvis galatin green or smartwool or 686 (picked them up at the ski chalet here, terribly comfortable)
heavyweight of redington stirups or orvis galatin blue or orvis bibs1 layer for fishing with air temps in the 40’s and not wading (think spring creeks)
2 layers for days in the low 40’s or mid to upper 30’s
3 layers for single digits or teens while wading
i wear a pair of ex officio pants b/w waders and layers to hold wallet. tom has no issues wearing his bibs with crocs and going into a gas station. thats always a funny scene.

MemberI also would like a pair of down pants to wear under waders:

John BennettMemberDepends on just how cold it is.
Around freezing or a little above light Helly Hansens leggings and light flannel pants.A little below freezing, say -5 to -15 expedition Polar tec leggings/flannel pants
-20 or more I wear heavy fleece over the Polar tecs. Although this isnt while wading but while out shooting and my outer layer is a pair of fleece lined snow boarding pants (substitute waders)
The key is a good base layer

Member90 percent of the time it is a pair of breathable thermals with a pair of ex-officio cargo shorts over them. A wicking sock and smartwool on top for the feet.
On really cold days I might go to a pair of redington fleece pants with stirrups. On the coldest of steelhead outings I will add a pair of snow pants over the thermals and I am ready to go.
The idea of the heat pad on the lower back is a good one. I started doing that a few years ago when hunting. I put aThermacare over my kidneys and it makes a huge difference.

MemberWhile I try to avoid cold water and either bide my time until our weather and water warms or head for more temperate climes, I occasionally join friends for a northern Arkansas lying and beer drinking trip briefly interrupted by fishing.

Membertwo more things:
marshalls / tj max has what i think is their generic version of under armor called ‘8’. you can get all sorts of compression shirts ls and ss, cold gear, half zips etc. most are under $14. granted they are most likely not made with the quality and concience of a patagonia base layer, they work and they are wallet friendly (these stores also sell the heat packs for gloves and boots with ~ 20 units in one package for about $5.
if you have not already realized, i’m a huge fan of the marshalls and tj max.
as for the stick on heat pads, i spent the pm today in the ER due to a major neck muscle(s) spasm. i’ve got the ben gay one on my neck right now and its warm and toasty. i’d put this on my calves if i were to wade in winter for chrome or co. trout.
