My current lanyard was made for me by a hippie kid out of hemp a few years ago when I lived in west yellowstone. It has rotted and been lashed together with mono and has finally given out to the point of disrepair.

I want to find a replacement lanyard that will be unique , but I am finding the same 3 or so everywhere that I look.

does anyone know of anything custom or more unique than your run of the mill morningstar from whorevis?

Morningstar’s actually a separate company from Orvis – you can get lanyards from them many places.

i really wanted to get ideas on what others are using, I have seen some cool custom ones over the years in western shops and didn’t know if anyone had ideas or input. My creativity generally is limited to tying basic fly patterns, but I could be inspired to create a new lanyard if I found a decent design that I liked.

Zach, I take it you use a Morningstar lanyard

    Adam –

I’m not sure, actually; I think it might be though.

There are some pretty interesting lanyards out there right now. I just buy a few for stillwater and rivers and change them up a bit. No more vest for this guy!

I could swear Guy Turk used to have an article he wrote on his web page that told how to make his custom made fly fishing lanyard, but for the life of me I can’t find the link.

It was made out of steel cable and had too strong magnets at either end so that it would hold together tightly, but if you went under water and got it snagged, the magnets would break open allowing you to get free.  The advantage of the thin steel cable was that it wouldn’t colapse and would keep all of your gear seperated so it didn’t all dangle together in one big pile.

He makes custom lanyards and does a great job. He has several different styles to choose from and will customize them however you like. He will build it and send you a photo of the lanyard to approve before you ever buy. I was looking for a lanyard for my trip to Colorado earlier this summer and he turned it around for me in a couple of days. I have been very impressed and the price is good. The one he made for me is the UT Southwestern model.

I recently made my own, and I would highly recommend it over buying one.

    Cameron,
What’s the gizmo holding your tippet spools. Also the neck padding on my lanyard is cloth covered foam sewn together to form a tube.

I’ve been looking at lanyards lately too. I ordered one off of ebay recently for $5. Haven’t gotten it yet. But do a search on ebay for “fly fishing lanyard” and you’ll find quite a few handmade one of a kind lanyards at what seems to be a good price.

I saw the Heavy Hauler fishing lanyard this weekend and purchased it. This thing is super stout and built to last a lifetime! Everything on it is beefed up, from the heavy duty swivel clips to the coated wire.

The picture on their website shows a side view of the neck strap which is actually croakies style neoprene, thicker than 5mm neo waders with a stiched cuff and sewn in reinforced d-ring (similar to what you would see with a neoprene camera strap).

I will take some better pictures tonight of the strap
