MemberMore great shots, Corey. I love #4 though. Great color on that one. ๐

MemberIn that case, the hardest part for me was removing the epoxy residue from under the threads. This was the only part I was troubled with. The rod blank I built on had a matte clear, unpainted finish. So I had no real worries there. Because of that, I actually used a plastic knife (picnic style with very large serations). With just a little work the gap in the serations was matched to the blank diamer in the section I worked on. Perfect scraper. Not sure how I would go at it with a painted blank.

MemberMeasure the distance from the next guide or from the top of the grip so that it can be remounted in the same spot. Razor blade will work for removing the thread, just make sure to only cut on the guide foot and only towards the guide not the rod. Do this by lating the blade flat on the guide foot and shave up the foot. A hair dryer will work to soften the epoxy finish enough that most can be peeled off. That should get you close bare blank with maybe just some bits from the underside of the threads. Repeated heat and maybe some scraping with you fingernail. Don’t balme me if you split the nail as it happens. Whatever you do, do not scrape with anything you even may supect of being harder than the blank. Also try not to damage the rod finish. Once it’s clean, place a pieve of masking tape around the blank both above and below the guide position and mark it inline with the other guides. Then tape the new guide in place. If you look around HERE, you can find a homemade wrapping station using mouse traps and a cardboard box. No realy it works. ๐ It can be done by hand without a station, but not by me. You do want to use rod finish as standard epoxy will cure too hard. Also, make sure nothing with silicone is used as it will ruin the epoxy and cause it to craze.
Hmm. Avoid chemicals like acetone too. Use mineral spirits for clean up the epoxy.
Again, the site I linked earlier has a ton of info:
http://www.rodbuildingforum.com/I am no expert, but I have built three rods and had to remove the stripper guide on my 2 wt a week after finishing the build to reposition it. Don’t do that if you can avoid it. Get positioned right the first time, not like me. ๐

MemberVery nice shots, Will. Congrats on the Hatches cover. Great magazine, though hate waiting a year between issues. Looking forward to the new issue. ๐

MemberWhat a beautiful creek, Zach. Too bad about catching brookies, but nice rainbow anyway. If that was near me, I would likely be there quite often. Catching brookies on small creeks is some of my favorite fishing.
Darrin Terry
MemberActually I saw it here first:
http://www.thehookupoutfitters.com/?gclid=CJqEkM3Z-pQCFSUqagodOnP6qgWell, probably not the exact same pic, but from the same session and same fish. Nice.
Came across the guides site a few weeks back when a friend put out word for info on an AZ creek he thought he might be visiting.

Not at all sure I approve of it, but it is like your bird. ๐
Love those pics by the way.

MemberCool. Thanks Rachel. Pretty little things.
Darrin Terry
MemberAll right, Mike, what is that brilliantly colored little fish?

This was the second fish I caught on the first rod I built. Was not looking for particularly large fish this day, but this was the smallest. Also, he was caught on a orange post para adams that I tied the night before. First day fishing rods I built and flies I tied. By the way, the first fish on the rod was a one eyed brookie. ::)Most of June was spent chasing little guys:

Small fish and loving it. Unfortunately, west side Sierra creekiing is shutting down due to water temps and low flows. So I guess I start chasing the bigger fish this weekend ๐Darrin Terry
MemberHavent had a rod in my hand for 7 weeks…maybe its one of those weird.
Somewhere on the road of life I went to the left when everyone else went right!
OUCH! Now that really sucks. I can only imagine the joys of having a family and kids. And missing fishing for them. I am sure that’s an easy decision, if not always a happy one.
I have friends with kids. Friends who make the same types of decisions to skip on things they need in favor of things their family needs. I’ve been fortunate to see their happiness at their kids joys and accomplishments.
I am single with no kids so I don’t have that to keep me off the water. I do know what it’s like to not be able to fish. In January I ruined my back. I was physically unable to fish for about five weeks. It drove me nuts. I still hardly ever go a day without pain, but that is not a complaint. Just the way things are. Others truely have worse problems than I. After all, I am fishing, and by most peoples standards, fishing a lot.
I hope that all the time you give to your family is revisited with some great days on the water. More so that you get to share some of them with you boy in the future.
In the meantime, keep reading. Posts like the ones which inspired this thread kept me jonesing for some water time. They still do. ๐

MemberAnd what’s wrong with weekends? I can’t complain too much, but that’s what I get: weekend fishing. I’ve fished locally every weekend for the last 9 weeks except this past weekend. I feel a bit left out not being able to do trips like some of those here, but hey, at least I got to replace my transmission to the tune of $3500 after tax and car rental. ๐

MemberLooks like perfect day to me, Aaron. I love brookies. I spent most of June and July chasing brookies smaller than that one. Like the pic of your boy in the pack holding the rod on the creek bank. Nice brown too.

MemberWell, as a trout guy, I must say part 1 appeals to me more, but this still looks fun. More cool pics. Sweet fish shots and I dig the shot of the deer head with the rattler in it’s antlers.

MemberSweet pics, Corey. I think this may be my third time returning to view this post and the pics. I still don’t really know what to say except ‘Wow!’.
I’ve not checked out the part 2 post for the John Day yet (that’s next) but this part looks to have been a blast. All the pics are cool but I really like the last three of the big bull.

MemberDamn, Mike. Talk about grip and grin. ๐ Or maybe that’s ‘grippin’ grin’. ๐ฎ Love it.

MemberI am not certain about needing a new one, it’s being dropped tomorrow. So a clutch replacement is definite. They’ll be inspecting the trans then. I am assuming it will need rebuilding or replacing. I called the local Toyota dealer: $2400 for a new in the box trans. I have not looked yet, but a rebuilt one should be about half that.
Either way, it sucks. But hey, I’ll go fishing this weekend and try not to think about it. ๐
Darrin Terry
MemberVery nice fish, and is it just me or do Mike’s pics keep getting better? Sweet shots Mike.

MemberI wanted to get back to this thread last night, but a few phone calls happened. And what looks like a new transmission in my truck >:(.
Like I said before, I am no expert, but the data listed on the Seychelle website lists many different chemicals, metals, microbial, bacterialogical type pollutants which are filtered out by their systems. The data, along with the testimony of users who I am familiar with, is what led me to choose their product. I have no links to the company, but certainly hope their product works as well as I have been led to believe.
Hopefully I’ll be using the bottle in next few weeks.

MemberI just moved into the ultralight world of fly fishing. I built a 2 wt 6’6″ 2 pc rod. So far, after about 3 weeks of fishing it, I’ve caught 20-30 fish with the largest being a rainbow about 12 inches.
However, a guide on the east side of the Sierras who posts on another board recently posted this trip:
http://www.flyfishingaddicts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=102
His 2 wt seems to be handling these beasts pretty well. He’s a Winston fan though, not a Sage guy.
Back to my limited experienceโฆI ablsolutely love the 2 wt I built. It does make the 6 wt feel like a log though. I can’t get much in distance with it, but how often do you need to on small creeks? Fun times IMO.
