MemberI recently joined the local fly fishing club here in Fresno. The 1st meeting I attended, the Sage rep for the Southwest, John Sherman, brought the new Bass Rods & the ZXL rods out for the club members to cast. I skipped on the casting as I can’t afford to fall for a rod in the rpice range these are going for. Anyway, the Bass rods are 7′ 11 3/4” in length, just under the 8 foot max for tournament fishing. Also, they are not rated in line weights, rather there are two: a Small Mouth & a Large Mouth. I asked John what lines would be used if the rods aren’t rated the same way other fly rods are. He said that they will come with a line for the rod, but that the Smallie would be close to a 6-7 wt. & the Large Mouth nearer an 8 wt.
As I said, I did not cast the rods, but John was able to effortlessly turn over a Deer Hair Mouse with the Bass rods.

MemberPatrick, I just got home from our annual Labor Day trip. It was cut short by the fire crews who took over the entire campground we were in to use as their Incident Base. Three days instead of six. I enjoyed the time in the mountains and the little time I got on the water, but these shots make the country I was in look shabby. Very nice photography. Again, keep taking that place in. As Seafood says, don’t take it for granted. Of course, having seen a number of your pics, and reading your posts, I don’t think you’re in danger of doing so.
Keep em coming.

MemberAdd some dry rub seasoning. A little time over a red oak fire. Some grilled white cob corn. Maybe a spinach salad with tomato, feta cheese and walnuts. A few pints o’ Guinness. Yum. 🙂

MemberHello (again). Figured I should re-introduce myself.
My name is Darrin Terry. I am 38 and single, meaning I answer only to myself (I still don’t get to destination fish:(). I graduated from CSU Fresno in Fall 1993, where I still live. I have worked for the same company since 1994. Twelve and one half years as a graphic artist and the last two as a prepress tech.
I just started fly fishing this year. I would definitely have to say I’m addicted. I hope there’s no 12-step programs out there for this. I caught my first fish on a fly (a small Brookie) my first day out. Two days later, on the same trip, I caught the biggest trout I’ve caught yet: a gorgeous 14-inch ‘Bow. Yeah, yeah, I know that’s not very big, but it’ll do for now.:) 😉
Oh yeah, this week I took a casting class at the Kern River Troutfitters Fly Shop in Kernville. Wow, what an improvement. I need lots more help, but that was a lot of fun & money well spent.:)
Future plans: more time on the water, more/better rods, better casting & catching, rod building & fly tying. In whatever order they find me.

MemberOnce again Patrick. very nice. There are some nice shots there. I especially like the bear chasing tail. : ;D You’re what, nineteen or twenty? Like fly fishing & photography. Live in Alaska. Have a girlfriend who fly fishes too. Hmm…what a life. 🙂 🙂
Thanks for sharing, Darrin

MemberJust a thought Philip, but if you’ve not given them a listen already, you check out Guster. Their album ‘Keep It Together’ is way cool. I’m pretty sure they’re on iTunes Music Store, & I have already been checking out The Postal Service there.
I’ve been trying to figure out the band you chose for that video, without actually looking up lyrics. It just sounded very familiar somehow. Not that they are like Guster, but similar mood. More electronic, but not oppressive. They are a bit like Imogen Heap or Frou Frou tho, which I do like. Good video by the way. Go figure, it makes me want to go fishing. That’s ok, that’s all I think about these days anyway.
Thanks, Darrin

MemberLooks like a great trip. That is a beautiful place. Hope I get there one day.

MemberHey Zach, I think it looks pretty good. The only issue I see is the darkish red text as it gets towards the right edge, which you mentioned. Other than that it looks cool.

MemberOuch Jay. Not good to hear. I am looking to buy a MacBook sometime in the next few months, and possibly a Mac Mini as well. My G4 Quicksilver is 5.5 years old now. It runs great, but there are many things it can’t do software wise. Is runniing Aperture the only culprit, or do the crashes happen with other programs? I work with Macs all day at work plus at home and am not used to problems of any sort. You can count on two finger the problems I have had with my G4 and one of those was the HD dying 3.5 years in. The other was a problem with my ISP early on.

and the original CD drive died, but hey I just plain worked it to death.

MemberTim, I have the funniest memory of some crawdads like this one. It would probably piss off some crawdad loving folks out there, but I love dog involved (now deceased :() much more than the 20-30 crawdads (also now deceased…hilariously deceased [smiley=evil.gif]). Is that bad? :-[
Sorry, I can’t identify the critter more, but thanks so much for that memory. It will always put huge grins on my gob.
Thanks again, Darrin
p.s. – the dog, name of Vinnie, took some good pinches in the process. this of course led to some flying crawdads as Vinnie then shook his head. [smiley=evil.gif] i’m sure you seen cats play with their food, well some dogs evidently do it too.

MemberSimon, I can’t speak to really big fish, but the little fellers can be a hoot. I was up fishing some small creeks in the Sierras the weekend of July 20-22. I landed a 4 or 5 Rainbows around 12-13 inch. However, I truely had a blast watching the 3-4 inch trout seriously attacking my fly. Must have caught 6 or 8 in one pool of very clear shallow water. I ended up tying on #8 hopper pattern just so I would not hook them. Watched for about 10 minutes as they rocketed off the bottom after this thing. They kept knocking the fly about an inch into the air when they hit it. I was probably gigging like a school girl, but it was lots of fun. And they are beautiful. No brookies caught that trip, tho I usually manage a few in those creeks.
Good luck, Darrin

MemberFantastic shots everyone!
Morsie, I love the photo of the dragonfly. That is just too nice. I have always been one to sit and watch them hover and dart about as they drift over reed beds.
Thanks – Darrin
Sweet shot of that bait ball too.

MemberHi Nealpod. I’m just going to give a link rather than re type. We’ve got the same discussion going on on another board I post at. Also, if you take a kook thru the posts for the past couple of months there, you’ll see quite a few UW shots.

MemberWow. What a great little creek. I wish we had brown trout waters like that here. Oh well, I’m off this weekend for a bit of fishin in the Sierras. Still, I may have to go visit my sister next year in TN. She’s been after me to do so anyway. Nice video too. ;D

MemberSorry aout the bite, that’s gotta put a crimp in your fishing. When I first saw your report I thought maybe you had made a trip out to CA. I live in Fresno, which is a very short drive from another Kings River. It is well known for being a rattlesnake filled area. Anyway, I’m glad you’re well on the road to recovery.

MemberToo true Cameron. The first time fishing with the camera I took quite a few shots underwater. Only two were worth keeping. One of those was a decent shot, but slightly out of focus – in other words I liked it despite its problems. The other would have been very nice I think, but digital shutter lag did me in. I laughed when I saw it. Focus was great, color too. The fish dove after pressing the button completely. Nice shot of its back though. ::)
Just have to keep catching fish I guess. I noticed you’re using the W20 by the way, I just got the W30. So far I really like it, especially on the water. Fits in almost any pocket + 7.1 MP + Waterproof = NO CAMERA BAG. 🙂 🙂
