MemberChad, try talking to Dean Endress at the Fisherman’s Spot on Van Nuys Blvd. He’s the manager there and a fly designer for Solitude Fly Company.

MemberFflutterfly! How ya doin’? π
Welcome to the board! Hope you find this place as inspiring as I have. Lots of great info and talent here. I am sure you will enjoy the Photography section and see a couple familiar names as well.

MemberCool stuff Neal. One of the guys on another board I post on linked to your site the other day. It’s getting noticed, that’s for certain. π π

MemberAndy Kim down on the San Juan does a nice job with midges.
I have been using one of his patterns acalled the Jong Special for the past year or so. Coats and Clark makes a thread he likes that I use. It has a braided texture to it that seems to help with the segmentation.
The hardest part seems to be gaining confidence in a size 24 fly. Huge fish will eat them, but fishermen are hesitant to use them. I tie a size 30 midge that works well on the tailwater I fish, but I don’t know if you need to go that small out west.
Good luck
Yeah he does! I ran into him on my local last October or maybe November. He and his brother were fishing above a buddy of mine. He can fish too. Had a blast talking with him. He and my buddy got into a fishing shoot out of sorts. That was fun to watch.
My local being a tailwater, the midges tend to be tiny. Usually the simpler patterns work best. Glass beads are nice and sometimes a strand or two of krystal flash as a tail. Sometimes very small differences can mean getting into fish or not. The other day my buddy got the fish, the only difference in our flies that day was that his had the tails. Next time out he was out of the tailed midge, leaving me to get into fish for a change. He was fishing them in a size 18 or 20, mine were an 18, tied on a 16 hook.

MemberI dig the podcasts Zach. I do tend to wait until there are several for me to download before doing so. This way I get to listen over a few days rather than listen and then jones for the next one so much. π

MemberIn that caseβ¦well done! ::)
It still amazes me how well the tiniest midges catch fish, and big fish at that. I often find myself experimenting with midge flies at the vise. I also find myself ignoring those experiments on the water. π

MemberNice, Abe. How about a pic of that fly? Congrats on solving the puzzle and finding joy with the new rod.

MemberHey Bryan, if you don’t mind, I would like to copy this post to another board I post at. There is no Utah section yet, though that might change with a few more members from there. Corey is a member there. The board is FlyFishingAddicts. There are a number of members from CO & WY, so perhaps they would be able to help spread the word for you guys. Or you could just sign on there. Whichever, just thought it would be another good venue for the info.
By the way, nice trip you, Corey & Aaron had. π

MemberThanks guys. I will forward the info to him. You’re correct Regan, the Matuka is an NZ original. I forgot about that. Thanks.

MemberSo, Benny, is this the kind of thing that filled that System X nymph box that you lost on my local tailwater last year? If so, now I really wish I’d found that box. π

MemberVery pretty brown there, Bryan. π

MemberI wish I could smoke a pipe or a nice cigar once in a while. I quit all tobacco about 6 years ago. Gave my pipes to a friend who cleaned them and smokes a couple of them regularly. I miss it at times. Having smoked cigs, cigars and a pipe, I think there is a drastic difference in how the habits form. With cigarettes, most people in my experience, use them to relax, especially when dealing with something stressfull. Cigars and pipes on the other hand tend to be smoked when one has leisure time available. After all a good stick can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to smoke. A pipe might take 20-45 minutes. They get smoked while relaxing, not in order to relax. Mental difference. One supports relaxing like a crutch, the other is more an enhancement. I had trouble quitting cigs – took me several years. Cigars and pipes took my deciding to stop. Like snapping my fingers. Most others I know who have gone through both have had similar experiences. Chemicals have an effect, but I think the actual physical/mental habit is by far the greater part of having trouble quitting.
I do have a couple of friends who always smoke or chew while fishing.
I quit because of other respiratory issues – asthma and I am prone to upper respiratory infections. That’s ultimately why I stopped doing backyard astronomy as well. The cold night air ruined me.
Funny, cold days on the water are OK though. π

MemberNice report, Clark. Fun read. Blues may not be the hardest fighting shark as you say, but they are one of the prettiest sharks around. I would love to catch one someday and fortunately they are abundant off the coast here in California. Thanks for sharing this. π
That is one hell of an advertisement for that 10wt. rod whoever made it. It’s bent like a whores back at a bachelor party.
Oh so descriptive. ;D

MemberLike I said before Benny, nice. But uh, someone’s been playing with their macro lens. π ;D

MemberI think the stick I fish most often these days is a Sage 4wt. I’ve two of those – a Sage Launch & a Sage VT2, both are 9’0″ 4wt 4pc rods. I’ve also got a St. Croix Triumph 7’6″ 4wt 2pc. The Sage rods are nicer, but all are decent. Both the Launch & the VT2 rods are pretty fast. The VT2 is a recent purchase and I really like fishing this rod (Thanks Joel!). I can throw a fairly heavy nymph rig with it or lay out a dry quite nicely, when my cast comes together :-[. Hard to beat for rods selling for ~$200 for the Launch and ~$400 for the VT2. A 20+ inch rainbow gets pretty lively on the 4wt. Of course I also fish a Sage Launch 6wt 4pc on the tailwater at times, depends on what I am after I guess.
I’ve a friend who fishes a TFO Jim Teeny 9’0″ 4wt with a fighting butt that he swears by. He fishes that rod in everything from tailwaters to the surf, for Kamloops rainbows to calico bass, barred surf perch and shovel nose guitar fish (upto about 34-inch).
I am sure there are better rods, but the price versus quality seems pretty good on these IMO.

MemberVery cool gift Mick! I think it will be very safe to say it will quite a while before you forget this birthday!
Joel
Hell, it’s gonna be quite a while before I forget this birthday! ;D
Congrats on all points Mick. I am definitely envious. Have fun and bring us a report so we can feel like it was us going.

MemberThanks for the info Neal concerning the Magic Tool Set. I intended to post this last night but got sidetracked by that website and its flies. π
Darrin Terry
MemberNice Neal. I thought I saw the Petitjean dubbing tool in your Fly in Repose post.
I’ve considered picking one up. How do you like it?
Darrin Terry
MemberSo, does this mean you got or will get your gear back? Or most of it? I hope so.
Gotta love that sometimes the bad guys just can’t keep their mouths shut. π
