MemberJoel,
Like everyone else I am feeling very sorry for you. I’ll ask around the school a little and see if anyone knows something about a cabin that got broke into. Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

Joel ThompsonMemberThanks for all the nice thoughts and great ideas all. I think I will be going with the motion sensor cameras put in hard to get to places around the cabin. We are 15 miles out of town on a VERY bumpy road, we have only a small solar panel that keeps a 12volt battery charged, and all of our lights are propane.
It took my wife about 7 hours to get things back in shape yesterday, but it is livable once again.
Clint keep those ears open for the whispers in the hall.
Thiago that beautiful lake has brook trout, cutthroat, and mountain whitefish.

MemberRemember to get IR flashes instead of traditional flashes.. you can also setup motion sensors (battery operated) that can be mounted outside that cause a large barking dog sound inside the house…
can you get a cell signal up there?

MemberNo advice on catching them, but as they say, an ounce of prevention…
1) Don’t leave anything valuable there. Hide or secure what you leave.
2) Insurance if practical– some cabins it’s not for fire reasons
3) Put a large, highly visible bear trap in the middle of the room to make them wonder what else you’ve left for them. 😉

Joel ThompsonMemberUPDATE!!!!
Warrants have been served, arrests have been made, and the crooks will be arraigned early this week! I can’t tell you how happy I am that these guys were caught! Now hopefully the courts will do their job and these guys will be spending a little time behind bars. I know one guy will for sure as he is a convicted felon that was on probation!
I will keep you all posted as things progress!

MemberWOW! That’s the best news I’ve heard in…well quite a while anyway. Let’s hope they use a big rusty nail when they fasten them to the wall. >:(
Congrats. I know it does not make it go away, but at least it’s some justice. Let us know how it turns out.

Joel ThompsonMemberExcellent, Joel! Â Did they try to sell some of your stuff? Â How were they caught?
Kind of a long story Zach but here is the short version of it. The weekend after the cabin was broke into I received a phone call from a guy that laid the tile in my house back in 2000. He has done some work here at the ranch as well so I have remained in contact with him over the years. Anyhow he calls me out of the blue and asks me if there was a cabin that was broken into up at the lake. I said as a matter of fact MY cabin was broken into how did you hear about that?!! He begins to tell me how a guy that works for him braught it up in conversation out of the blue at breakfast and it just struck him as odd since no one in town really knew about it except myself and the sherriffs department.
Long story short this guy was working a job with him for the past month and my tile guy kept bringing it up in conversation and finally got the story out of him. The story was something like this. “We took a drive up to the lake and my car wasn’t running right so we parked it. I (the tile guys worker) went to see my friends who were camping at the dam and the other guys in the car went for a walk. When I went back to the car the next morning the other guys were past out in the car with a bunch of booze and a pair of binoculars and a spotting scope. I asked them were the hell that stuff came from and they told me they broke into the log cabin and stole the stuff and I better keep my mouth shut or they would kill me!”
Considering that one of the guys is a convicted felon I can understand this guys fear and not coming forward sooner. I am just glad that he finally came forward with the truth and the guys are behind bars!
That is it in a nut shell.

MemberSo, does this mean you got or will get your gear back? Or most of it? I hope so.
Gotta love that sometimes the bad guys just can’t keep their mouths shut. 😉

Steve K.MemberJoel,
Make sure you talk to the prosecutor so he/she will include restitution as a condition of any guilty plea. Oftentimes….even when the crook gets probation….the judge can require them to pay a fine (restitution) or make a small monthly payment to their probation officer. At the completion of the probationary period…..the PO would stroke you a check for your damages.
I know it’s a hassle….but stay involved in the process. I’ve seen too many crooks walk because a victim missed a court date.

The Itinerant AnglerJoel –
Your homeowner’s insurance should certainly cover this kind of theft if you haven’t already pursued it.

MemberJoel,
Glad to hear things worked out for you.  As for the guys paying back restitution via the PO’s office good luck.  After working in this field it’s a rarity that anyone ever pays the restitution.  Or if they do pay they pay something like 10.00 a month.  I have a case where the perp is paying 5.00 a month. ÂDon’t want to rain on your parade but…

I had my room broken into at fraternity house by a local that was working one summer. Bulloch County (Statesboro, GA) was great about getting me restitution. This included money for an old shotgun and a ton of clothes. I made the claim to the PO over the phone and the crook had to pay within the year. Later the PO called and I went to the courthouse to pick up my check. It was as painless as possible.
