MemberA friend of mine picked up a 4wt TFO that he loves. All of my rods are St. Croix, and I would not trade them for the world.

MemberI bought a Beulah Trout Bum 4 wt last year. Reasonable price, casts nice. One thing, the rod I was shipped did not have the hardware shown on the website. It was standard nickel hardware, not anodized. I used it all summer, and like it a lot.

Mike McKeownMemberScott G2, 8′ 4″
or
Sage ZXL 8′ 6″
but the price might not be right, I also like the St Croix and the TFO, but for my money, I would get a nice fibreglass stick, there used to be thread about getting a Fenwick Glass Rod, for reasonable cash. If you are serious, then thats the stick.
Maybe Zach can dig it up, casue my search’s come up empty

Memberi would suggest the superfine if orvis hadn’t increased the price. too many fancy features for looks that won’t help you catch any more fish.
love mine, great action, the prices was great and it is 4pc
i fish that more than my t3, silver label, and sage 4wts

MemberI recommend you look at the TFO Finesse or TFO Professional.
Excellent value in those rods although the TFO Pro is not finished to nicely.Dec 5, 2008 at 7:56 pm #31492Abe Mathews
MemberI’ve liked the St. Croix Avids that I have tried, but I’ve also heard very good things about the Cortland 8′ 4wt Brook series and the new St. Croix Imperials.

Mike McKeownMemberRob, I road tested a new 2w superfine on some alpine streams, actually Daryl Human did, but I was flying wingman, and I was not impressed, at about lunch time we stuck that in a tube and whipped out a Scott…
The tip did not track, it collapsed off to the side, and thus, it couldn’t hit a target at 10 foot… to top it off, I could not get a soft presentation, it either collapsed the leader, or unrolled the loop far too fast, it just did not perform the way I expected it to, to say the least, se were very disappointed…
To test it under sterile conditions, we took it onto the lawn back at the lodge, and past it around to a few serious guides, who all came back with similar answers.
Then we rigged it up against a 2 weight Vision, and the Vision knocked the sox off it…There’s another brand you should look at, I have been impressed with most of their sticks, the 1w is an absolute gem… a bit quick for my liking, but a great blue line stick…

MemberOk, so i have been looking aruond the net at your suggestions and I think I am going to go with … an orvis ZG…because they are half off right now.

Joel ThompsonMemberI recommend you look at the TFO Finesse or TFO Professional.
Excellent value in those rods although the TFO Pro is not finished to nicely.I second the vote for the TFO Finesse. Great little rod for the price. If you had a little more cash to burn than I would go with the Winston BIIX or BIIT if you like a little slower casting stroke.

MemberI think the stick I fish most often these days is a Sage 4wt. I’ve two of those – a Sage Launch & a Sage VT2, both are 9’0″ 4wt 4pc rods. I’ve also got a St. Croix Triumph 7’6″ 4wt 2pc. The Sage rods are nicer, but all are decent. Both the Launch & the VT2 rods are pretty fast. The VT2 is a recent purchase and I really like fishing this rod (Thanks Joel!). I can throw a fairly heavy nymph rig with it or lay out a dry quite nicely, when my cast comes together :-[. Hard to beat for rods selling for ~$200 for the Launch and ~$400 for the VT2. A 20+ inch rainbow gets pretty lively on the 4wt. Of course I also fish a Sage Launch 6wt 4pc on the tailwater at times, depends on what I am after I guess.
I’ve a friend who fishes a TFO Jim Teeny 9’0″ 4wt with a fighting butt that he swears by. He fishes that rod in everything from tailwaters to the surf, for Kamloops rainbows to calico bass, barred surf perch and shovel nose guitar fish (upto about 34-inch).
I am sure there are better rods, but the price versus quality seems pretty good on these IMO.

MemberI have cast the new Cortland rods, both the Brook Trout and the Big Sky, and I was impressed. I like the look of the rod, and the feel and action are amazing. Price is right too. 😉
BTW, I also cast the Cortland Bigsky 10 ft. 4 and 5 wt. and they are very nice also.

MemberWhile you’re at the Orvis store look at the 8′ 4 wt superfine.

MemberYou gotta go to the shop and cast a few…..but I’ll offer my opinion…
I’ll second the motion for the Scott G2 8’4″ 4wt.

MemberMy favorite 4wt is my Winston BII-t 9 footer.
My son has a Cabela’s Stow Away 7 piece 4wt that is also a very nice rod for the money.
