MemberCameron, I’d just like to say very nicely done, love the nice browns! And that looks like a sweet rod. A lot of 3wts & lighter are used on the streams in the southern Sierras.
Eric…if you like the underwater shots, you might want snoop around the Kern River Fly Fishiers forum. Quite a few of the folks there are using the Optio Wx series cameras. I think I first read about them in a gear review Zach did, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I just got one a couple of weeks back and they are pretty cool. I must say tho, that putting it in the water the first time was a test of will.:) Just not used to being able to do that with electronics or cameras of any sort.
Again, nice shots – Darrin

MemberThanks once again Simon. I’ll check the link more closely this evening after getting my gear ready for tommorow.
Yeah, the dinks. I know what you mean about the colors, and I too love the parr marks. A little more character in them sometimes. And it’s amazing much they fight for their size. There is another fly fishing board I have been posting at which mostly specializes in the southern Sierras here in California arounf the Kern River drainage. That often means Golden Trout, which also means small, usually under 8-inch. But real beauties for fish. I’ve only caugt one so far, a few years back on spinning gear with a size 12 single egg hook. Look forward to paying them a visit with a fly rod now. I’m not complaining about fish size, as it’s not what drives me. Not to say I don’t dream some. 😉 Anyway thanks for the feedback.

MemberThose sound cool Simon. I don’t see me going to any of these places to fish any times soon, but we like to dream. I am very new to fly fishing having just started this spring. However trout fishing has been my fishing interest since I started fishing 6-7 years back. At the moment, it seems that all I do think/plan/scheme fishing. 🙂 So watching a fishing video seems to fit the mode right now. My Dad is comong to visit tonight, so of course we’re going fishing tomorrow. 😉 ;D
Thanks for the feedback on some of your local vids. NZ is most definitely one of the places I want to visit in my life. The trout fishing sounds & looks incredible! Aqfully big fish, especially compared to the little guys in most of sring creeks I fish. Of course I’ll be up near Golden Trout country in 4 weeks & again 6 weeks after. Hopefully I’ll get some decent pics.

MemberAs I said I’m glad the encounters went well. However, I believe (and I could be wrong here) that bears are generally tagged only after they have shown either a predisposition toward stealing food from campgrounds or showing aggressive behavior towards people. So, if I’m correct, the ear tag is not necessarily a good sign. Bears and cougars have been my only worry (aside from other people) in 21 years of camping these mountains. That said, I have never seen the beasts I fear most in those places I love most. I accept the risk, knowing it’s very small and go on.
A wonder to most people I know: I have never set foot in Yosemite, and have lived in California all my life, and in Fresno since 1990. 🙁
That said I know people who continually experience Yosemite and do not know any of the rest of the Sierras. I think this is equally sad. I am amazed at the beauty of these mountains constantly. I consider myself fortunate to have them for my backyard. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

MemberI have not tried either Parallels or Boot Camp as of yet. The IT guy where I work is using Parallels on a MacBook. He said it was a bit tricky getting it set up, but that it works well. I have not even laid eyes on Vista, and intend to use XP when the time comes. I really only need Windows for some astronomy stuff and to interface my GPS for updates & such. Tho XP is a very stable OS, but it still seems clunky to me. I’m sure this is just because I am a long time Mac user and am not that comfortable with Windows.
I work in the printing industry, what can I say. Macs are still the norm for me and I like it that way.

MemberYeah, they said the delay was due to the needs of the iPhone release. Personally, I am much looking forward to it. I have been wanting to replace my G4 Quicksilver 2002 Mac for a while now. Since the release is this fall, I think I’ll put it off till then. Seems like a waste to buy a Mac now, and then upgrade the OS 5 months later. Not that $129 is too much, but better if it comes with the computer.
But Leopard looks like it’s gonna rock. I have using Macs at home since 2002, and professionally for almost 20 years. Best thing going IMO. No hands on experience with Unix/Linux, but I love what it has done for Mac OS X as a core system. Windows has come a long way, and I may run it on my new Mac with bootcamp, but OS X is certainly my comfort zone in computing.

MemberBeautiful shots, especially the browns.
I caught my first brown on the fly this past weekend but after landing he kicked out of my hand, in the opposite direction of the fly, so no pic. Oh well, there will come a time when the camera is at hand at the same time as the fish.
Beauty playin’.

MemberWow, nice shot in Yosemite! I have been camping in the Sierras just south of Yosemite for just over 20 years (I live in Fresno) and have yet to see a bear. Seen just about everything else in these mountains tho. Personally, I am OK with that. Glad your encounter was a peaceful one. 🙂
Yeah the water is way low this year. We only hit 39% of our average snow levels this year, so the spring creeks are especially low now. I am headed up this weekend to fish with my Dad, and I think it will be just about the last week to fish the creek I have in mind. Glad you got some fish in the park while you were here.

Yes indeed, the Sierras are wonderful. I did not grow up camping and only fished a little. But there was one trip which stood out in my memory from childhood: we went camping up near Silver Lake in the Sierras. I started camping with a couple of friends after high school in 1987. Ten days I shall never forget. Mostly partying of course, but it changed me and my priorities forever, including the annual camping trips I mention before. I was living on the central coast of California back then and had sworn never to live in the central valley (my mom’s parents lived in Porterville). So of course I moved to Fresno for college in 1990. Now, 17 years later, I’m still here. I consider getting out, but the Sierras are a big draw for me. The camping, the 4wheeling & not least the fishing. And now I have added fly fishing to the list of hooks that keep me here. I grew up on California beaches, but I am most definitely a child of the mountains. They seem to hold me somehow. I am not particularly spiritual, but there seems to
