Hey guys, I’ve a friend on another board who is living in NZ for about 6 months. He arrived in late Dec and has decided he needs to start tying as his streamers are getting torn up by fish and jungle. He’s looking for suggestions from the other board, but seeing as there are a number of fishers here from the area, I thought I would ask you.

If you are interested in his catches so far, here’s a link.

And this is a link to the suggestions he’s had so far for flies.

So, what do you say? Any suggestions on streamers for the guy? I am sure other suggested flies would be welcome to. 😉

    Thanks.

I haven’t really fished streamers on NZ’s rivers, so cant add much value!

I fished a large Woolly Bugger on the Hutt river recently, brought 4 fish out in about half many hours (thats not bad for the Hutt).

    Pattern:
    Hook #8 TMC long shank
    Bead: Tatanium colored cone, 4.5mm
Body: Sparkle Crystal in a peppermint green
    Hackle: Black
    Tail: Black

Isn’t the matuka a pattern that was created in NZ?

Thanks guys. I will forward the info to him. You’re correct Regan, the Matuka is an NZ original. I forgot about that. Thanks.

I’d suggest he pick up a great book by Derek Quilliam called The Complete Guide to Trout Lures of New Zealand.
