Wayne, you are a lucky fellow. Man, I hate that, but glad to hear to are recovering OK.
Only other person I’ve known to get snake bit wading was also wading a shallow riffle but at dark. He was bitten in the calf by a cottonmouth and was out of commission sick for at least two weeks.
In my younger days, I have waded streams (upper White and Clear Creek) at night frog hunting and killed several cottonmouth. They catch frogs around the edges, so be very careful near shallow vegetation as you now know. One reason I don’t fish the spring creeks in the summer wading. If I can’t float it, forget it.
Another reason I don’t like pontoons on Ozark streams in the summer. If a cottonmouth decides to climb up on one with you, what are you going to do?
