Cameron MortensonMemberThere are a lot of photographs in this post…so I’ll link my thread that I just posted on the Fiberglass Flyrodders board.

PoudreRiver, our friend Dave, and I take a fishing trip once every two years. This years trip was to Montana since our friend Dave was driving from Ohio to California to start a new job. Montana seemed like a good meeting point.
We spent the week fishing relatively unknown creeks and the lake where we were staying. Most trips to Montana involve “sexy big name” rivers…but it was kind of nice to spend the week not seeing another angler or having to share water.
We were able to meet up with Joel aka Moosedog, his wife, and yellow lab Riley and fish some lesser known water outside of Deer Lodge. We had a great time and the Thompson family could not have been kinder to us. Thanks again Joel, Deb, and Riley.

Thanks, Darrin

Joel ThompsonMemberCameron those are some great photos! I especially like the one of the cutthroat being held just above the water!
It was great meeting you guys and getting to know you during your stay. The cabin has always been and will always be a very special place to me and it is a very cool thing to share it with someone and have them leave feeling the same way I do about the cabin and the area around it! I only wish that the smoke from all of the forest fires would not have been so bad! When the air is clear around here it is even more beautiful then what you saw. I guess that just gives you an excuse to come back and see us!

Eric WellerMemberBoy those are great photos! I can’t wait for my trip in September. We head out on the 4th and return on the 12th. Hey Camerson or Joel, any spots to hit near Yellowstone Park? We’ll be staying in Cooke city most of the trip, wouldn’t mind fishing somewhere other than soda butte and the Lamar, especially if the restrictions stay in place. We’ll be on the madison at the Slide Inn for 3 days and then finish off at cooke city.
PS, Cameron don’t sweat the texas hold’em, I learned the same way you did last year with the guys I fish with.eric

Steve K.MemberEric,
I just returned from the Cooke City area. The Park has been getting some decent t-storms every afternoon and as a result, the Lamar and Soda Butte have been the color of mocha. Check in with Ronnie Wright at Beartooth Outfitters in Cooke City (look for the big Orvis sign). He has all the USGS quads and sent us off to the Beartooth Wilderness. It was great! I did fish Slough and Upper Lamar. You can catch fish there but it gets hot in a hurry. Fishing is typically over by 11:00 a.m.

Cameron MortensonMemberJoel…it was a “pleasure” losing my $10 to you. It didn’t feel to bad at all since out of five players (including the notorious “cheater”) it came down to you and I in the end. Just an idea but maybe you could take the winnings and purchase Riley a new collar…ha.
You see that sad look in his eyes over the “huckleberry” collar. Do it for him…

Beautiful fish, rods, scenery, story
Thanks!Aug 6, 2007 at 2:38 pm #18712
Joel ThompsonMemberGood idea Cameron! My heart is telling me camo would look really nice on him, but Riley says he wants one with spikes on it…kids these days…they always want something to drive their parents crazy!

Cameron MortensonMemberI wanted to get PoudreRiver’s approval before posting any more photographs of him. Here are a few more from the trip.

PoudreRiver wet wading in the meadow water. It was all fun and games until it started raining…and I had told him to skip bringing along the rain jacket. My bad.
PR working a stretch of water with cigar lit to keep the mosquitos away.
Joel’s boat…complete with a Johnson motor that took a single pull usually to fire to life. We were so sure of the motor…we didn’t even carry oars. Looking back…that could have been a problem.
PR with a lake cutthroat. This fish had a lot of fight for their size.
How did that Whitey fit that dry fly in it’s mouth?
Cigar again…this time to keep those pesky Spruce Moths away. Ha…
Dave is a master boatsman…and kept us on top of feeding fish all week.Joel…how about camo WITH spikes? Ha. Next Riley will want to pierce his nose…and put some ink on his shoulder. Ha.

Joel ThompsonMemberCam great additional photos you have attached there! Did you notice that was no fear in the eyes of those fish that PoudreRiver are holding? They must know that he is only a cheese eater! 🙂 (Sorry Poudre I had to get that jab in!)
I like the idea of a camo collar with spikes for Riley. Throw a bear banger on that collar and I think he will be one bad ass dog!
If Dave could always have that intense look on his face while navigating the boat I would hire him in a heart beat to be one of my guides next summer. So Dave if you are reading this post and you need a summer job next year give me a call.
Thanks for the compliment about my dog Malcolm. He is a very nice dog, but kind of a lousy fisherman! I guess you can’t have it all.
Joel
