    Joe,
I’m in a simliar position, I leave for the Florida Keys in three weeks and need to purchase an 8wt line for fishing.  Problem is I have no idea what to buy or whether or not I should just try to get a used line somewhere for my rod.

    Eric

For saltwater lines I generally go with clearance lines that are a year or so old… old new stock if you will huge discounts.

I have a TFO 8wt professional with a sage 1680 reel that will be a multi function set up. I want to fish for sight fishing in salt water as well as bass fishing in fresh, dose anyone recommend any particular line that will cover my spectrum. Thanks in advance for any input

Agree with Simon, temp is going to be your issue.

If have a big boat available to you I would suggest pulling up tight to a shrimp boat that is dragging and casting into the chaos that follows.

    Good idea!

I’m not sure if your body has a gear drive (will look like a little flat head screwdriver end coming out of the lens mount on the camera body) or only HSM.  But, a great super cheap starter lens would be a 400mm 5.6 prime.  These should be sub $200 on auction sites and it’s a great focal length, off brand, Sigma or Tokina seem fine, just check for fungus or dust and oil on app blades.  These aren’t HSM so the focus will not snap and can in fact “hunt”.  They are also slow @ 5.6 but you can get some great shots and it will double your current focal length at approximately the same aperture.  I always bumped min to F6.  Anyway, nice cheap little lens.  I would not use a T/C in your setup, they, in my experience, require an extremely stable platform (tripod) and a very fast lens, nothing slower than f4.  I would even want to run them in mirror lock up if I ever used them again.  I gave all of mine away.

The attached image was captured on a cheap body with a cheap lens way back when.. a D70 with a Tokina 400mm f5.6.  Not a great shot. but it will capture birds in flight.

I’ve owned several 80-200 / 70-210 2.8’s and these are AWESOME lenses, but they just rarely have the reach for what you want.  The 300 prime is better, but really IMHO 400 is pretty minimum and 600 is optimal, but unless you have the equivalent of the cost of a small import in your account.. the 600 is out of reach, plus.. it’s a monster.

I have always heard giant fluffy pink and white or orange and white.  Have tried to catch them off Ship Island (south of Biloxi) a few times.  While there are no lack of sharks that are willing to follow, I have yet to get 1 to commit.
In Borski’s first video he ties a pretty cool pattern for sharks.

We’ll be in the Dixey Bar area.

Great pics guys! I can see why you want to be out in it. The peacefulness alone is captivating.

We don’t get much snow down here like Zach said but I did manage to fish 2 of the coldest days we have had in awhile with my sons right before X-mas. It never got above freezing and the second day it was all of 18 F and as you all know there was a lot of dipping rods to keep the line moving. Had a blast and the fishing was not bad either. Hope to post some more soon.

Actually, if it is important, what about taking on the printing process yourself? Once you start doing the important stuff yourself, you’ll never go back. As long as it’s not volume printing, you’ll be much happier ($), and end up a control freak (like we printers) when it comes to your fine prints. shannon

I agree, however anything over 8×10 can require a significant investment in equipment, especially for archival quality.. but once you do it yourself you never go back.. some of the new sub $1K epson printers are awesome!

The D70 with a newer lens can do 3D Matrix metering, where an older lens may only support Center Weighted or Spot.

Remember to get IR flashes instead of traditional flashes.. you can also setup motion sensors (battery operated) that can be mounted outside that cause a large barking dog sound inside the house…

can you get a cell signal up there?
