So it’s about time for me to change vehicles. The ceiling is coming down in my Dodge Dakota, and I’ve driven a two-wheel drive, mid-sized pick-up with no cruise control for long enough.

I’m curious what you guys are driving. I’m looking for something that gets better than the 16 mpg of my current truck. I want something comfortable for long trips because I have friends and family spread out all over and make quite a few three- to nine-hour drives each year. However, it needs to be able to handle some outdoor activity. I do some deer and small game hunting, frequently haul multiple firearms to and from the gun club, and fish year round.

Any thoughts? Anything other than a pick-up or large SUV fit the bill? I tend to cram a lot of stuff into my truck every weekend, but I could see me fitting it into a mid-sized SUV or something along those lines.

    Curtis,
Not sure if it would fit your needs but I have a subaru Imprezza that has around 255,000 on it and is still going strong (with the exception of a little body cancer around the wheel wells). The outback wagons are just as comfortable and put you in the mid 20’s for milage.

I’m driving a 1999 Honda CRV. It smells nasty. I think there are rodents living in it. Found a gnawed power bar with shreds of wrapper under a seat.

Its 4wd and has enough power to pull my drift boat. I’ve driving it from DC all over the north east and out to the Rockies. Its got enough room for me to sleep in.

The newer CRV models are more cushy inside and less outdoorsy. I can’t complain. It gets great mileage I don’t plan on junking it anytime soon.

I do want a conversion van with bunk beds, a tying table, and a sink. Something for longer trips. Wife says I’ll look like a kid toucher and my friend said he’d paint ‘free candy’ on the sides if I got one. Its my dream car though, one day.

2012 Toyota 4 Runner 4wd – Very nice on the road, way less of a truck ride than my 2002 (210,00 miles).

21 mpg with the V-6. Pulls the driftboat like it ain’t back there. Mine is 2wd with the Off Road Package. Push a button and both rear wheels will lock…giving you posi-traction.

    I love it.

I drive an Acura MDX, good for everything except off road (although it does have AWD). I am drooling over the toyota tacomas. That will be my next vehicle, hands down.

Do you know if the Outback has any towing capacity? Any experience with any of the hybrid SUV’s and towing? I have a boat less than 1000lbs. Thanks

I don’t tow with my Outback, although my wife is after me to get a trailer for my kayaks.

I’m in another Jeep Grand Cherokee. I can’t tell you how much trouble those beasts kept me out of in driving conditions that would float other AWD or 4WD vehicles. Narry a problem on either of them but then I have scheduled maintenance done on them… for the most part anyhow.
Don’t giggle but my next fishing machine could be a Ford Flex. Vans and minivans are the most practicle fishing vehicles but they’ve fallin out of favor. I loved having my ’70’s Dodge full sized van loaded back then with everything I needed for a quick, long weekend get away. I could carry bikes and fishing and camping gear all inside and still sleep in it. I sometimes hauled sailboards or my catamaran on top too with no problem.
The most practicle equivalent I found today is that Flex. It has the room to bunk in and will easily hold assempled 9′ rods inside where they belong. To get AWD and all the bells and whistles I would like on one ain’t cheap so I’ll probably just wait around until some lease turn-ins show up with low mileage and some warranty left.

In terms of power and drivetrain no problem stock! If you want to go bigger (>1000#)

Have had a 2006 Honda CRV since 2006 – great vehicle, hands down the most reliable I’ve ever had.

About to get a new company car – Toyota Hilux 3lt turbo diesel 4×4 dual cab – won;t be able to fit rigged rods in that one 🙁

    Best Regards,

93 Chevy 1/2 ton.  2wd work truck model with a 5 on the floor and a a fifth under the seat.  The truck has 563,xxx miles on it and thats no joke.  Its ugly as shit, smells like a lawn mower but gets 24 on the highway thanks to the v6 5 speed combo.  I replaced the original engine roughly 20k ago and am putting new floor boards in it tomorrow.

We call her Whiskey Tango for obvious reasons.
