    Rob,
I have yet to hit the streams since you sent me your beer/fishing lanyard combo. We have had rain 2 out of 3 days a week here in the southeast chich has made for every river around to be at a state of extreme flood about every 2 weeks.

I did however test drive it while tailgating for the SEC Championship last weekend and it was a huge hit amongst Alabama fans.

The 490LL is the standard by which all 4 weights should be measured! I wish that you had a 586 gen II, It is the one rod that I regret selling.

I saw the Heavy Hauler fishing lanyard this weekend and purchased it. This thing is super stout and built to last a lifetime! Everything on it is beefed up, from the heavy duty swivel clips to the coated wire.

The picture on their website shows a side view of the neck strap which is actually croakies style neoprene, thicker than 5mm neo waders with a stiched cuff and sewn in reinforced d-ring (similar to what you would see with a neoprene camera strap).

I will take some better pictures tonight of the strap

in reply to: 7’ 11” Bass Tournament Length? #40758

From what I can gather, they instituted the rule because of 10′ flipping rods that were being used way back when by west coast bass tournament fishermen.

    you nailed it

I do a lot of bass fishing and to me there is nothing better than this one for topwater.

I wouldn’t go bass fishing without a worm rod (baitcaster) though. Its just too deadly and you do not have much sensitivity to detect bites with a floating flyline and a sinking fly. I would love to hear how they fish with a line matched full sinker if anyone has tried.

I’ve been debating on the LM or the SM or the 290grain line for my 890 RPLX since they came out and will probably do one before spring.

Bill Ballan reels have been going pretty cheap lately also. I saw one go for $160 on another forum this week.

    thanks Will,
Steve, I found an eariler thread with a $129 carbon fiber knock off. These appear to no longer be under $200

Ditto, have a few lightspeeds and velocities and they are bombproof and great looking. I would reccomend over the loop

in reply to: Loop Evotec reel ? #40538

In the last few years, I know that they have changed hands a few times, each time resulting in multiple model changes.

Danielson continued to manufacture reels under their design from the old evotec’s and they are floating around.

I know that everyone has opinions, and mine would be to stick with a reel that has lots of distributors here in the US or better yet, made in the US and sold out of US fly shops, vs. overseas. I’m not big on paying premium prices for import products. They seem to be sparsely sold here in the states (FBO has them), which might make parts and warranty tough later down the road. (especially since they like to change designs quite a bit).

the Opti series reels are very good looking though!

i take it you went the online auction route? I did with mine and saved some serious coin. Its a bit of a pain in the ass but if you are patient and do diligent research there are very good deals right now

in reply to: Anyone else doing a lot of hunting this year? #40517

I’m looking into a Beretta 686 or a Browning Citori.  I’ll buy used, but I’ve been up the escalating quality ladder with fly fishing and that taught me to simply buy what you want the first time and buy once.

Right now I’m deer hunting with a 6mm Remington that’s difficult to get ammunition for.  I had my eye on a Remington CDL 7mm Mag today – may do that down the line.  But my immediate goal is to at least kill one grouse in the Appalachians before I leave this area.  Lauren’s done with her Ph.D. in 2011, so we’ve got about 2 years left.

    Zach

Zach, I debated the same two guns and purchased a Bretta AL391 field gold last year and love it. I enjoy the 3rd shot (and 4th shot when legal) and felt that over/unders were gentlemans guns that were not practical for most of the wingshooting that i do here in the southeast. it is a beautiful gun that has all of the gold engravings of birds that you would get with an upper end beretta o/u, and does you better with turkey, dove & duck than an o/u would.

Tom Lowe Skeet @ camp creek pkwy. sells and rents beretta & browning, i went down and shot a few rounds with a 686 and a 391 before i bought which helped me make my final decision

I use a 7mm Mauser that is a nail driver! It is a great action for deer imo
