Nice fish….it’s a shame he killed it.

lets not put our noses in the air, no one can say what they would have done had they been the lucky recipient on the other end of the line. Besides, its not like someone caught it last year when it weighed 39# or the year before when it weighed 35#.

I believe you have to keep the fish and weigh it on an igfa certified scale for it to become certified anyways.

I am all for purism and a 99.9% advocate of catch and release fishing, however if i caught a 40+ pound brown, it would be properly weighed and re-weighed to be certain that it was official, and if that meant that the fish died, then I would probably have it mounted and placed in a museum.

hog island boatworks was supposedly working on a poly-style row-able jet sled hybrid.

on the Tenkara note, NGTO had ripped it up pretty good and (accurately) comparing it to trout fishing with a crappie pole like this one below:

it does look like a lot of fun though!

Those are some of the better submerged shots that I have seen. The clarity is phenomenal. Great backdrop also.

the 9wt XI3 reminded me of an RPLX as far as the action. It was obviously much lighter but very stiff

Rob, Can you combine the beer lanyard with the fishing lanyard?

in reply to: Need Lanyard Advice #40642

i really wanted to get ideas on what others are using, I have seen some cool custom ones over the years in western shops and didn’t know if anyone had ideas or input. My creativity generally is limited to tying basic fly patterns, but I could be inspired to create a new lanyard if I found a decent design that I liked.

Zach, I take it you use a Morningstar lanyard

in reply to: Streamer Leader Knot #38698

you can do a double uni-knot. that is quickly becoming my favorite fly to leader knot because of its ability to create a loop if needed, and its ease to tie. but for line to leader connections it works great regardless of the diameter difference. I use it a good bit between braided line and mono leaders on my darkside striper rig with good results.

Thanks…definitely need to float the Hooch. I’m going through all the DNR boat registration drama right now. My check cleared over a month ago so I called today. Nutshell version….they need the previous owner’s boat registration card to complete the transaction. Of course they were not going to tell me that unless I called them. They are a very complacent bunch to say the least.

Drifter, it took me 5 months to get my registration sticker for my south fork skiff. The driving force was me having the DNR officer call the guy in Social Circle while he had me stopped on the hooch to ask why they had not sent it yet. Trying to register a boat that was purchased from Montana with a vin # from a boat manufacturer that is no longer in business turned into a monumental chore.

Now you just need a foot mounted troller for solo excursions.

in reply to: Streamer fishing advice for AR tailwaters #38567

Now I know why my efforts aren’t paying off. Time to change tactics and go with smaller buggers.  I’ve been chucking the big pike looking flies hunting for big fish with only one hook-up.

    JK

Maybe you need to be dropping a smaller bugger off of the back of these collossal flies. i do that a good bit on my 15′ sinker and usually the chasers take the small fly after being drawn to the larger fly in front (or behind).

I would not disregard swinging big patterns into deep holes that you generally catch fish in while nymphing. It has worked for decades and probably will continue to work when the bite gets tough.

You also have to remember that the Madison is a MUCH faster river and an extremely different river. There are a TON of sculpins that browns actively feed on in the late summer and fall, which makes patterns like the zoo cougar effective.

If you are going to be traveling on 191 between Big Sky and YNP or West Yellowstone I recommend the Corral.  Lively bar and great bison burgers.

Ditto, I lost my cookies in the parking lot there one night

Im a fan of the Griz if you fish the madison

I like these a lot. You can go as big as 2/0 also

in reply to: Need some rod/reel input #38201

    Ditto the 4wt.
you can throw bigger stuff on your two 5wts so disregard the 6 and get a killer dryfly rod.
I have a Sage SPL 8’9″ 4wt and my lady has a Winston BIIt 8’6″ 4wt and they both are so much fun to fish that I use them at any excuse i can.
I landed a 21″ rainbow last year on my sage so landing decent fish can be done.

If you had the option I would strongly consider a Scott G2 also

one of my buddies swears by this guy and fishes with him for a few days every spring. He’s the type of guide that will keep you out as long as you are willing to fish hard, and has a fondness for chasing sickle tails.

thule makes a rod carrier, also lots of folks use ski racks out west. they will clamp about anything and can be locked but wont protect your reel from theft
