Airline travel with precious luggage like fly rods and associated equipment is always a gamble. If something bad happens to your valuable equipment, and you feel you have been mistreated by an airline, then you might try Dave Carroll’s approach.
Mr. Carroll was flying on United when his Taylor guitar was broken by baggage handlers. After considerable negotiation without results, he threatened to write a song about his experience and post it on YouTube. “Good luck with that one, pal” was the response from the airline. So, he did it:

Over 6 million views. Taylor has given him two guitars in appreciation of the publicity he has brought to them. United offered to make amends, provided he agree to take down the video. “Good luck with that one, pal” he replied.

And it gets better. He has become a celebrity of sorts, and has been invited to speak and perform at customer service conferences and events. Here is what happened on his way to a recent one:
