the spring on my D70 flash broke off and Penn camera told me it would be several hundred bucks to get it fixed. wtf!

option a: walk around with flash up all time
option b: spend hundreds of bucks
option c: 1″ piece of duct tape to hold down when not in use

Moonstone (RIP) made a 800 fill down bag rated at 15 degrees. Packed down, it was the size of a meatball sub. They made the best down bags in my opinion.

I use the north face. I got a 0 degree down bag on campmor a few years ago. My 30 degree TNF bag, the old cats meow, has a fleece like liner. That makes sleeping much more comfy. I like their bags.

things to look for when sleeping in really cold temps:

• internal zipper for contacts so they won’t freeze in case
  space for boots and socks so they wont freeze
  attachment pieces so bag connect to ground pad
  adjustable hood
  bevelling-determines how and where the down will be located

we stopped in at feathered friends in seattle. all products are locally made. they even have 2 people bags to save space and warmth. serious gear made by serious people. i want their down pants to wear steelheading under my waders:

here are the usual hot spots for big trout around here:

Mossy Creek, Va 2.5 hrs drive
N. Branch Potomac, WV 3+ hrs
Falling Springs, Pa 2.5 hrs
Yellow Breeches, Pa 2.5 hrs
Gunpowder River, Md. 1+hrs
(big springs aka the ditch was the place to go back in the day, Pa 2.5hrs)

You have to work for these fish. Lots of walking, quiet stalking, and correct presentation. Of course the breeches will be crowded in the lots but you can walk and find fish throughout from boiling springs down to the bend where residential houses start.

There are plenty of lesser known spots. If you get ahold of the “TU Limestone Streams Of PA” you can find some lesser fished waters closer.

I just tied a custom order for a guy heading out this friday and included some standard small nymphs/midges and some big streamers. the guy is fishing near the mouth at basalt.

I threw in some foam wing pmd/bwo generics for him to use as an indicator.

lost a huge channel cat on sunday with a straight piece of 20lb vanish as leader.

i tried to lip the beast but it broke me off (no net, bogas, etc)

at least i caught the incident on film.

I use seagur flouro or berkley vanish unless i’m throwing something with a small hook eye.

If I do end up using smaller tippet I have a bunch of old spools of orvis superstrong that work fine in 5x or 6x.

i really only watch dc united games on tv and will tune in for other games if nothing else is on.

going to a home game entails ‘watching’ but it is mostly jumping (RFK stands go up and down about 1 foot when we jump) singing, drums, smoke bombs, beer showers, chanting, etc. and with tix from $18-30 with me being front row on the 40 every home game, i can’t resist (and we are sponsored by peroni- 2 kegs/tailgate)

most of us tape the game and watch it when we get home or the bars on the hill replay them when everyone trickles in.

i don’t take road trips to follow bands anymore but used to skip shows for steelhead trips.

i use about 6-7′ of 20lb but section with a small barrel swivel to 3-4′ of 8lb seagur.

both mono and seagur are tied with an improved clinch knot to the swivel.

i use a triple surgeons loop to attach the streamer. the streamer is thus on a loop which imparts more action.

you go threw more tippet that way but i find the action of the fly is worth it.

superbowl sunday is one of the best days to go fishing. streams are empty with people watching the game 🙂

i don’t watch football/throwball but i absolutely time my trips when dc united is not playing at home. (beer and dogs are $2 this wed night at RFK)
