My best fishing buddy in the world is making a job change which sees him going over 2,000 miles away.

For trout (which is really what I love) 1 hour 15 minutes drive one way and it is the only year round trout fishery in the state of Texas – otherwise buy a plane ticket and it is about 8 hours away ;D.

For bass/panfish and warmwater species, 15-30 minutes.

Salt for redfish, ladyfish, sea trout, is a 4 hour drive away (I try that casualy about once a year).

Between 15 minutes and a couple of hours depending on how fast you drive (We do 90+ in Montana most of the time), what few miles of the 1000’s available within a 150 mile radius of home you want to fish and how bad you need the wife to do a shuttle.

Right around the house I have options for unremarkable sunfish and black bass angling.  The nearest “worthwhile” salmonid fishery is 2 hours or so.  Carp fisheries occur in 30-minute and 1-hour drive increments for me.  Striper options vary from 1 hour to 90 minutes.  Summer is nice because I can focus on local carp all the livelong day without fretting about what I’m missing elsewhere.

I am about 1 hr 15 min to 1hr 45 min from State College area; Spring Creek, Lil J, Fishing Creek that would be my prime location and well worth the drive. I could be to Clarks, Yellow Breaches in about .5.

Tim, whacha calling “good stuff”??? Where are you at?

A walk across the street is the “primary” fishing grounds. (my farm pond)
10 minute drive to three different rivers for smallies and carp.
35 minutes to good smallie float water
1 hour to decent bottom release trout water
40 minutes to more wild brookies than you could fish in a lifetime
1.5 hours to the best wild trout creeks and rivers in the state of PA, perhaps in the eastern US.
2 hours from savage, NB potomac tailwaters,
2.5 hours from GL steelhead if traffic is right and the po-po is not watching.

    And everything else in between.

not to mention turkey, deer, grouse out the back door.

I guess I have it pretty good.

The further you go from the central Alp region, the lower the altitudes with rivers & streams less suitable for trout. The Dutch & German border being the last bit of area with trout.

    * Belgium => complex licensing system (e.g. you need a state license as well as the license of the beat. The state license can differ from wading or walking along the banks!  😮

Sounds like Europe is in sore need of some progressive fisheries management.

I am 2 hours from the Little Red River in Arkansas and 3 hours from where the Norfork river meets the White river.

    Absolutely!

I was listening to a podcast about NZ fishing and the settlers from England made sure that the private ownership of rivers & streams should be left in England. The state owns the rivers and everyone is allowed to fish.

    Sounds good…

Jay we are trying to get over to England next spring, but it’s going to depend on a few factors, mostly involving airline vouchers and miles that we’re trying to put to use.
