MemberI have seen some reviews that just repeat what is said in manufacturers litrature. The best reviews I can recall have been the ones done in the past few years on bass rods for fly fishing done by Fly Rod & Reel.
Even after you cast a rod in the parking lot or at a show its hard to tell how you will like them when your fishing. Some rods seem to get better as you fish them. Line selection makes a big difference too.Its nice to have some info on a rod from a review but I think one of the best ways to pick a rod is to look at what more accomplished anglers are using under the same conditions and try those rods to see if they work for your casting style etc.

MemberIts been really slow for me! (secure.statcounter.com takes forever to connect what ever that is). I thought it might be my PC, but I’m on my Mac at work now and I am experiencing the same slowdown!

MemberThe shot of the Provo, was that near or on the way to Sundance? I was there a couple of years ago. Awesome how beautiful that area is!
david king
MemberMy thought exactly! I am going to cast one as soon as I can. I was thinking of a 7′ 10″ 3 weight since I already have a reel with 3 weight line for a longer rod. It might be a good outfit for bream as well as trout.

MemberMerry Christmas to you Cameron! I am having a lot of trouble moving data to and from this site now.

MemberScott S3 906 4 piece, and S3 904 4 piece, with floating and sinking lines and a Sage 893 4 piece. I don’t have a short rod now, but I am looking. I have a S3 8 weight that I hope to beat up on some Stripers soon.

MemberPeddler I have Craig’s Fishing Yellowstone Hatches and I know he fishes a BIIx 5 weight. I think Winston could use someone with credentials like him to give their rods some real world credability since Tom Morgan and Glenn Brackett are out of the picture.
On a different note I posted on the Winston forum a question to you about which line you like on your BIIx 6 weight. What lines are you using on that rod? I am thinking about replacing my 6 weight. I think a 6 weight does everything a 5 weight does only better.
ibookje your right! It is a lot of fun to check out new rods. Post your impressions of the Z-Axis after you try it. I want to try a 6 weight before I buy anything new.

MemberThats the way things go! I cast the Z-Axis 9 foot 5 weight today and it had a really nice light feel in hand. It cast a short line well and I had little trouble making some really long casts. I think the rod is much improved over the XP. I have not cast the BIIt but I would bet it is a sweet rod. George A . said it had to soft a tip for him and thats his feeling and since of he had design input and was involved in the development of some of the rods that finished with slightly higher scores I can see how he would feel that way. I have a 8’9″ 3 weight Light Line Sage Rod using the Quiet Double Taper Line that George really likes and it is the one rod that I have that is “perfect” every time I fish it I just think WOW I’m lucky! I am watching ebay now for a 7’11 3 or a 9′ 4 weight LL. The market and word of mouth advertising will make or break the BIIt.
Winston rods have a pretty ardent and critical cadre of fans and I am one of them. I have been critical of the company over the changes they have made in the past few years. I think George Anderson is right when he says that great rods are made by great fisherman and he is a great fisherman based ondavid king
MemberYou work in politics…. Watch out for that Foley guy! Get out of town quick! There are alot of great Rivers up there and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Check out Murrays Flyshop its pretty close.

MemberThe Flychucker in Nashville was the only place I found that had a Tom Morgan rod you could cast. It was a 3 piece 4 weight. I cast it and it was a sweet trout rod like a Winston WT but a little crisper and very beautiful. Next time your in MT you could stop by Tom’s place and cast his rods I believe. I talked to him on the phone a couple of years ago and I wish I could meet him his rod designs at Winston are some of my favorites. On the last page of Fish & Fly there is a picture of him and a short quote from some early Winston literature, nice touch I thought.
I have sworn off the 5 weight for a while. I have been using a 6 a 4 and a 3 weight. My 5 is on more or less on permanent loan to my son. I’ve almost come to the conclusion that a 6 will do every thing a 5 weight will do only better and it will cast a 4 inch sucker 30 feet on the back cast no problem!
As far as the testing setup criteria etc well I guess its a little better than nothing. I was suprised that he had some pretty negative comments on rods that he sells in his shop. He really didn’t like the new Winston Boron IIT! He was also very candid about advertising hype. I bet he has a bunch of Z-Axis 5 weights ready to go out the door. I would!!!

MemberSimms makes a waterproof bag (Dry Creek Camera Bag I think) that will fit on your wading belt that works for point and shoot camera. I carry a Nikon 8400. 400.00 plus the cost of the card I would hate to get it soaked. That Ghost net makes a decent background!

MemberSome fella beat Steve Rajeff with a Powell Rod in the best of the West in Denver. I almost threw all of a TT Line on my 8’9″ 5 LT 5 piece, the knot was on the ground at my feet. I understand that some casters can carry a whole line in the air… HOW? I have a tendency to use my wrist some and I think thats holding me back distance wise. It lets me adjust my timing a little. Your a instructor how can I keep from flexing my wrist. I have been working aggressively on my double haul too. I don’t have a 5 weight now but I have been using my other rods. Are there any especially good casting videos that you could suggest.

MemberWith the Grand line I was thinking in terms of being able to carry a heavier fly. As I remember the bIIx had considerable backbone and it took some line to bring out the action. I have a bunch of lines and they can really change the character of any rod. When I bought my 4 wt. S3 I asked Brian O’Keefe what line he liked on that rod and he liked the SA Trout taper so I put that on and for dry flies or light dropper rig it

MemberI’ve lot cast all these rods plus the SLT and Z Axis 4 wt. I think if you put something like a Rio Grand line on the BIIx or Z axis you would have a really versatile light line setup. I liked the 9 foot G2 it was real smooth and cast with considerable authority and so did the SLT 9 footer. I think the 8’8 G2 and 8.5 SLT are a little light for streamers compared to the other rods you mention. I have used my S3 9 foot 4 wt with a Rio Grand line and a 150 grain wet tip express and it works well. I know you like the WT and it is a very smooth refined rod. The G2 has more power and is still very smooth. I have been using several S3s a 4 and 6 weight for the past few years and I find myself wanting a medium action rod again something like a G2 or SLT. Good luck let us know what you end up buying.

MemberNice Picture! I love the yin and yang fish logo.

MemberI think Winstons current graphite rods a as good as any rods made. They are the most beautiful also.
This story is BAD KARMA though. I am sure there are spin doctors in LA recently freed up from former republican members of congress working hard to make it go away in 5 oe 10 years!david king
MemberThe article was well done and went in to more depth than the usual internet chatter. I appreciated Glenn Brackett’s perspective on the lineage of rod building going back to the original builders etc. By not accepting his advice on a successor that he could pass the bamboo shop on to its really devalued their future product. Without a name builder I don’t see how Winston will maintain their prestige and cache as a premium builder of bamboo fly rods or as the premium brand it was. Would you rather have a rod built by someone hand picked and trained by a master builder or someone who was building graphite rods 2 or 3 months ago?
