MemberI just got through reading a sad piece on the departure of bamboo rod makers at Winston in Fish & Fly.
There goes their chance of getting any ad money out of Twin Bridges! On the upside though they have a kick ass new website with movies and everything. I guess progress is good sort of!Nov 25, 2006 at 5:52 pm #14039Mike Fielder
MemberI have herd alot about this article.

noneMemberThis is kinda old news for insiders 😉
Update Nov 27:
I wrote about it in October 2005: http://bassbug.blogspot.com/2005/10/end-of-era-at-winston-rod-company.htmlNov 25, 2006 at 8:38 pm #14041anonymous
MemberI’m sure that all us non insiders appreciated the post.

noneMemberWell the news wasn’t as ‘secretive’ as one might think. In fact it made quite a stir when Glen decided to resign when the management didn’t approve of his choice of following up the bamboo devision. But again, it’s not CNN headline news item either, so no worries!

Cameron MortensonMemberDavid…what do you mean by “the industry is contracting”?

MemberIf I thought it was right I would be singing the praises of those green sticks here. I know that this is Zach’s site and Zach has a thing and a deal going with Scott so in respect to being in his house, I zip my lip.
With the blessings of Zach though, that could easiy change! 😉Nov 26, 2006 at 2:51 am #14048david king
MemberThe article was well done and went in to more depth than the usual internet chatter. I appreciated Glenn Brackett’s perspective on the lineage of rod building going back to the original builders etc. By not accepting his advice on a successor that he could pass the bamboo shop on to its really devalued their future product. Without a name builder I don’t see how Winston will maintain their prestige and cache as a premium builder of bamboo fly rods or as the premium brand it was. Would you rather have a rod built by someone hand picked and trained by a master builder or someone who was building graphite rods 2 or 3 months ago?

MemberWell, I think I might chime in some more.

MemberI think Winstons current graphite rods a as good as any rods made. They are the most beautiful also.
This story is BAD KARMA though. I am sure there are spin doctors in LA recently freed up from former republican members of congress working hard to make it go away in 5 oe 10 years!Nov 26, 2006 at 3:38 am #14051lestrout
Memberibook – re your comment that this is not exactly CNN Headline News, I actually saw a CNBC Power Lunch segment of Woody explaining his new business strategy at Winston.

MemberThere are some great new rods out. The 8′ 4 wt and 8’6″ 5 wt BIIt are wonderful, smooth rods. The Z-axis are, IMO, a vast improvement over the XP. Orvis’ new Troutbum editions of the Super Fine rods look wonderful, althought I have not cast them. The Scott G2’s are also a great new version.
We may be living in the golden times of graphite. My comment about the industry contracting is just that, fly fishing is losing it’s base at the very time that rods, reels, etc. are reaching new heights. With rods and tackle so good, maybe our focus should be how many new friends have we introduced to fly fishing?

Good points and exactly the reasons we started a new FFF sanctioned fly fishing club here in the south.
The main focus is to educate. Through that we hope to bring a new crop of fly fishers into the sport to carry the torch.Nov 26, 2006 at 11:25 pm #14054Zach Matthews
The Itinerant AnglerHey guys –
