MemberI fly into Denver a lot and can usually get a round trip out of Atlanta or Nashville for 200 0r 250 then rent a car and head up to Wyoming. You could fish some in Wyoming and head up into MT. The difference in airfare would probably cover your car rental.

MemberI would try Rio Selective Trout in the Camo Green. It stays supple in cold Hiwassee!

MemberWell I just watched the DVD and the primary issue is the fast tracking of natural gas drilling on Bureau of Land Management land and in National Forrests. Bush and Cheney have opened our public lands and its a mess. Scared land, poisoned livestock, ranches and lives ruined over a potentially huge area. There is hope though! People are organizing and politicians are listening in some areas. If anyone on the board wants to borrow my DVD I’ll send it to you if you promise to send it back. Zach is that legal?

MemberZach you might want to consider a music category for this site. I think I saw the show on PBS. OCMS Emmy Lou Harris etc. I have a major iTunes addiction. Recent purchases The Shins, Wincing The Night Away, Drive-by Truckers A Blessing and a Curse and The Dirty South.

MemberCalumet has been around forever. Mostly selling to pros, they can be trusted. Andy Anderson shoots great pictures.

MemberI think that the guidelines set forth are really in the interest of maintaining journalistic integrity in view of whats possible in Photoshop. W. Eugene Smith took great license in the darkroom and he was regarded as one of the greatest of all photojournalist. I think it come down to the ethics and reputation of a photographer. No one would question the integrity of James Natchwey but if you were a new photographer

MemberThe Quiet Double Taper is a great line. I use it on my 8’9″ 3 weight LL. It picks up off the water really smoothly and casts really well on lighter action rods. Give it a try especially if you can pick up last years stock at discount. Sage has switched from SA over to RIO for their lines and I guess the dealers are getting rid of their stock. The new line is Quiet Double Taper II and is about 65.00. It comes in a color called BLUE DUN and is a double taper only in a 80′ length. They use to make a weight forward also in the Quiet Taper but I think they discontinued it. I bought it on George Anderson’s recommendation and he was right on. Rio’s Selective Trout line is a really nice line too.

MemberWhile your trying Scott rods try the S3 4 weight 9 footer. I’ve used one for a couple of years and its really versatile. Its a pretty good replacement for a 5 weight which is what I used forever. Now I use a 4 and a 6 weight.
david king
MemberI don’t think I have ever cast a 7 weight but I bet my S3 6 weight could handle a 7 weight line with no problem. I believe that most of the faster stiffer rods you could easily go up 1 or 2 line weights for most fishing conditions. I think that a 6 weight is a better all around rod than a 5 weight for general fishing on good size water with a really wide range of flies. Anyone else feel the same way.

MemberJay, I have seen a few really nice customs on ebay built by a shop in Idaho. They looked really well done with upgraded hardware and probably could be bought for slightly less than a factory rod. If I really wanted a Z-axis I would probably go with the factory rod because of the warranty. None of the rods we have talked about are what I would call ugly. Winston would get the beauty prize but the others are well done. The Scott is kinda cool in a retro classic way and they all cast well. Mike your right about the hand

MemberThe best thing about shooting RAW is it keeps your options open as far as any future use of a given image as long as important image values are recorded. 95% of my work is destine to be converted to a custom CMYK profile for printing. The color gamut of a press or most common output devices is very small in comparison to what the CCD or film actually records. Conversion of colors and tones for specific devices is controlled by colorsync profiles or the device will do a RIP conversion when the file is output.
The whole process of color monitoring has always been a bitch whether it was film or digital. On important files that you have a lot invested use non destructive editing techniques and save a master file. I have been using Aperture and you can save out versions without affecting your RAW file. I think is pretty cool!
I have started to think of RAW as more like a digital negative that I need to “develop and print”.david king

Memberibookje Your right about the cosmetic on the Z-axis. I wish Sage would look at some different reel seat hardware and wood spacers, they could really improve in that area. I do think they are probably the best casting rods all around now though. If you are a die hard Scott, Winston or T&T fan there is not enough difference to change though. I would like to try the 8.5 foot 4 and 5 weights to see how they cast.

MemberI use the Abel Click and Pawl Creek reel on my 4 and 6 weight rods they balance well and pick up line fast and are very attractive and simple to use. I have some Sage reels for 5 weight and lighter rods they are click and pawl also. For my 8 weight I went with the Lamson Hard Allox Litespeed its some kind of sealed disc I believe. I would of loved to put a Tibor reel on but they just are way to expensive for me considering how much I will probably use the 8 weight. The thing I really like About my Abel reels is the simplicity and ease of use. If you want to change a spool you just press the lever or button and it comes off easy. The other reels use a O ring and the spool pops off which can be kind of abrupt.
I’ve got over 200 bucks in each reel but a didn’t buy but 2 of them retail. The rest came via ebay.As far as nicks and dings go they bug me! thats probably because I am a advertising photographer and I can spot a scratch or piece of dust or hair out of place at 50 paces.
I have seen some older reel like Hardy Perfects they have a gorgeous patina from many years of use that is beautiful, kind of like old guns. I wonder if modern gear will age as well.
I love the sound of a outgoing click drag! I set drag by feel, just enough to keep the spool from backlashing. I like modern and classic reels good design is timeless.david king
MemberI guess I should have the rod in a week or so. When I get to try it out I’ll post something.

MemberI tried a 7’10” 2 weight today and based on a very favorable impression I ordered a 3 weight in the same length. I really was surprised at how well it cast!

MemberGoogle is becoming this Orwellian kind of thing that I am beginning to wonder about! They know to much and collect to much data to what end I don’t know. 😮
