They had Shane Davis the guy in the picture on the last Fish Schtick Podcast available through iTunes or at http://mauromedia.com/ its a entertaining story. They have some videos from the recent Fly Fishing Retailer Show in Denver as well.

when you cast it” Thats a great line!

I like Top Gear! The Isle Of Man Show was cool! Not much room in the Porsche S for a fly rod.

I found the stewardship of the land and the approach to farming interesting from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. With the issues that we have here surrounding the production of corn and soybeans for food and the raising of livestock and the resulting runoff and negative impact on water quality we might all do well to kill and eat a Deer and plant a bigger garden.

$30.00 for a time cover thats crazy stupid! One thing I see that is a glimmer of hope for photographers artist and other creatives is the ability to drive their own content like the guys at Catch Magazine. You can keep all the revenue then.

There have always been weekend warriors and more recently people making money from what is essentially their digital photography hobby. This has led to more participant driven content making it into print as well and they don’t know what to charge.

A guy that shoots high end weddings was asked how his business was? He replied “all my clients are still rich”. If you are competing where price is the deciding factor then being the cheapest wins.
I don’t want to be in that market!

Beyond that from a photographers standpoint you would have to admit iStock Photo and the other stock agencies have ruined the market from a money making standpoint for photographers. Jay Meisel and many others made great money shooting stock.

I’ve used a couple of 3 and 4 weight Sage trout rods and they work fine.
I had a TXL rod for a while and it was is a lot of fun! If you get lucky and stick a good Bass hang on and don’t put to much pressure on the upper half of the rod. Don’t try to lift or swing a bigger fish in a boat or on to shore. Once the Bass gets a little tired you can drag them in with a relatively straight rod.

I’ve used it off and on since it came out and it has many unique features. I think there is a 60 day full feature demo and some excellent support videos at the Nik Software site if you want give it a try. Check out Vincent Versace’s website as well he has some excellent training DVDs.

There actually is a ASMP rate for web usage but I don’t know what it is. If a e-zine or publication can’t pay for content it means that they are not viable so what is the point of proping them up with free work. They need to get funded by the market or borrow money like everybody else.

The mix tape was good! I wonder how they get away with using it or if they have permission?

The people that put TIF out get paid by advertisers and it drives sales for retail operations that are associated with TIF Sponsors or investors. Don’t be afraid to ask for money! The whole exposure thing is just a way of scamming you and getting something for free. Take it for what it is a insult!

Adam make some excellent points but I would add:
    1. Use a tripod and get the camera out of your hands its a distraction. This will allow you to visualize you image in you minds eye and then place the camera in the appropriate position. The tripod will extend your shooting time both early and late and allow you to use a lower ASA setting. It opens up the opportunity for panoramic or HDR images and bracketed exposures.

    2. Go to the library or a gallery and study the landscape images of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Paul Strand. Nobody has seen or photographed landscapes any better than this trio. There are others that are as good but none better at photographing America.

    3. Understand your equipment and practice setting it up so you can catch that once in a lifetime shot! When you come around a mountain and there is a great shot and the light is about to go you should be able to get your camera on the sticks in a hurry. Ansel Adams got one shot at Moonrise Hernandez and that was it forever but he was ready. The harder you work at photography the luckier you get.

Check this site out and sign up for his newsletter it would be a good place for a consummate student! http://www.johnpaulcaponigro.com/

I wouldn’t worry about specular highlights, they have no detail. You could use the auto bracket feature in your camera to give yourself a choice of exposures. You can recover some detail in PS camera Raw, Aperture, and lightroom. Try to find some shade!

I dig that last shot! It would make a good 2 page spread or poster. Interesting color rendering, almost a sepia green.

I’ve been in the photography business for 40 years and I wouldn’t advise anyone to get into it unless they just have a overwhelming desire to do so.
As far as angling photography I don’t think anyone makes a great living at it. Photography is just one income stream that they may have along with being a tackle rep doing seminars, hosting trips etc. You have about as much luck making it big as a photographer as you do of pitching in the major leagues. Do it for fun and don’t be a whore when you have a chance to sell something you should get paid whatever a established photographer should get for the same usage. If you want to be a pro act like one. You might consider checking out an Organization like the Professional Photographers of America for starters. Many photographers are hurting right now, on average business is down as much as 20 or 25 percent. Don’t quit your day job unless you have money to burn! Nice pictures keep working!

I’ve been on the CPAP machine for years but when I was going to Wyoming several times a year I just didn’t want the hassle of dealing with it. I’ve never gone more than a week without using the machine though.

I believe the dry air in Wyoming at least in my case allows me to breathe a little easier. Couple that with the scenery, fishing, and superior beef steak and I’m so happy I don’t even want to come back!

I’ve come really close to buying the Leica Digilux-4. Which is about the same thing as the Lumix except you don’t get the Leica look that is in the firmware and it come with some very cool software from PhaseOne. The M8 and a real Leica lens wouldprobably be 7k to 9k. The Digilux-4 goes for about 600.00. If yoiu would like to see some good samples from both cameras check out this site http://www.boxedlight.com/index.htm Nice shots Douglas!

I was going to try the poster thing but I don’t have Illustrator. I try a lot of filter packages and plugins for Photoshop and Aperture. There are several really good ones from Nik Software. If you dig BXW I would encourage you to try Silver EFX Pro trial. I’m real close to buying it. I just can’t make up my mind if I want to buy a bundle deal for Aperture or for Aperture and Photoshop that has their full suit of products. Imagenomic makes some really good stuff as well. I think whatever you apply to a image you need to ask yourself is this a artistic enhancement or does it come off as a gimmick?

I’ve been waiting for the Obama poster plugin for Photoshop! Everyone should have a image like that of themselves. I wonder how a super wide angle shot of Cathy Beck holding a big bone fish would look run through the Obama poster effect! That would be iconic! Found it!
