Thanks Zach – the choice is narrowing (I think) the G2 8’8″ 5wt v the BIIx 8’6″ 5wt.

I am now in Bad Ischel in Austria for a few days of fishing the Ischler Traun, Ischer Ache and the Goiserer Traun. Man the weather changed from dry to drizzle all day! It is a lot colder than the past couple of days too. Good thing I got all my cold weather gear with me!
I will post about the trip in my web-blog when I return.

I got the G2 905 after casting both 885 and 905.
I found the 905 to have more authority while the 885 felt a lot lighter. The 885 was to me a bit on the soft side compared to the 905. The 905 had much more oomph without being stiff. In fact it is a very nice medium action rod.

I fished the 905 today for the first time and man what a sweet rod! I used heavy gold bead nymphs as well as small dries and it casts & tracks superbly! Both short as well as long casts.
I like the 9ft because of it extra inches for mending.
By the way, I left my Bauer M1 at home and I am using the Hardy Perfect reel this trip. Great reel!

I thought that I would throw this question onto this thread:  I do not have the option of test casting a Scott in Chicago until the fly fishing shows come around in the winter.  Unfortunately, I have need of another long 4 at roughly the same time.  How do the 8’8″ & 9′ G2’s compare to the 9′ BIIx?  I am looking for a rod that has enough guts to cast nymphs, streamers and yet be able to fish a dry within 20′.  My normal preference in rods are Winston WT’s with an increased interest in cane.   😕  Any input would be appreciated.

I’ve lot cast all these rods plus the SLT and Z Axis 4 wt. I think if you put something like a Rio Grand line on the BIIx or Z axis you would have a really versatile light line setup. I liked the 9 foot G2 it was real smooth and cast with considerable authority and so did the SLT 9 footer. I think the 8’8 G2 and 8.5 SLT are a little light for streamers compared to the other rods you mention. I have used my S3 9 foot 4 wt with a Rio Grand line and a 150 grain wet tip express and it works well. I know you like the WT and it is a very smooth refined rod. The G2 has more power and is still very smooth. I have been using several S3s a 4 and 6 weight for the past few years and I find myself wanting a medium action rod again something like a G2 or SLT. Good luck let us know what you end up buying.

That’s something to consider but I found the BIIx’s I own didn’t much care for the Rio Grand. It seemed to overload it way too much. I have to say, when I weighed that particular Grand on a line scale that 6 weight line weighed well over one full line weight heavy. I hope that was an anomoly with Rio because the other lines I have of theirs are as near perfect as I’ve found!
Line choice can get as personal as rod selection. Too bad there doesn’t seem to be a good way to test various lines without robbing a bank!
Th Selective Trout from Rio seems a match made in Heaven for a couple of my BIIx’s.

By the way, I just put a Wulff Bass Taper on my 7 weight S3… that combo SINGS!

I tend to like lighter lines and longer bellies like Rio’s Selective Trout, both DT & WF, Windcutter lines on 5 & up BIIx, Steelhead tapers, etc.  Lynn likes the heavier lines.  Luckily, I am a line junkie and have multiple lines to choose from.   😎

With the Grand line I was thinking in terms of being able to carry a heavier fly. As I remember the bIIx had considerable backbone and it took some line to bring out the action. I have a bunch of lines and they can really change the character of any rod. When I bought my 4 wt. S3 I asked Brian O’Keefe what line he liked on that rod and he liked the SA Trout taper so I put that on and for dry flies or light dropper rig it

The way I do it is I bring along my own reel with the fly line I use most (brand, WF) and I cast rods with it. Still the only way to judge a fly rod, no matter what the ‘others’ say or what the advertisement cries out…
