Will, not sure about that model flash, but I do know some of them don’t like hi MH batteries and sticking to 2000Mh or under is not a bad idea.
Do you have an external battery pack for your flash ?
They make the things crank – I couldn’t live without mine.
(Don’t know the Nikon model #, but I know they have them)
The other thing is to soften the flash as much as possible and get it closer, half the distance and you use half the power and shorten the recycle.
(I don’t know your set-up so please ignore the above if it’s a stupid suggestion ;))The best thing though would be to get a pro flash, they crap on the on camera stuff with great conviction from a great height and if you buy well they don’t cost much more.
Something like a second hand Elinchrom 500 ws head and small softbox would be good.
Their soft boxes have an optional diffuser or silver reflector that fits over the tube and works well for photographing small things.
I use the same setup for small objects, though not as small as what you do.
Can help you with Elinchrom model #’s and stuff if you’re interested.

Wow, of all places to go, you make a trip to Champaign Illinois? I’ve only been there in the winter time and only remember flat ground, open fields, wind and snow for as far as the eye could see.
And the fishing is crap.. 😉
Yes, there’s not a lot reasons to go there unless you’re a student or really like corn and arctic weather. 😀I grew up there, because my father (RIP) was a prof. at the U of I from 1968 -2000 and I still have a sister and her family there.
The steelhead thing looks like something you could get a guide and do for a couple of days to give a little more depth to a midwest trip.
I have read some articles over the years in the American magazines about it and it looks like fun.

All true John, but there is any easy solution – take the pictures and write the story.
Allthough very new to writing (and spelling an grammar :D) I do find it’s easier to fit the photos to the words when I do them.
I think both can be hard on the day, but at least when combined you control the pace and direction of the work.
When I get stuck in a story I can go through the photos to get ideas or inspiration.
(A great tip Morsie gave me)When I was just doing photos it was easy to get hung-up trying to make everything look grand and like the perfect day out, but now, if conditions are crap I can shoot it and write about it – everything fits.
I had a funny experience the first time I wrote a story for a non-fly fishing mag recently – after an advance from a friend who’s a very busy write in the newspapers I got an appointment to show my fishing stories to a client of his and then an assignment from a big airline magazine.
In the brief they wanted 3000 words on guided fishing (spin and fly) around the country where the readers could fly in and hit the water without a tracker or a lot of their own gear.
And they would take some shots if I could supply them..Anyway, I did the story and heard nothing back from them for a few weeks, naturaly Iassumed they thought the story sucked and they were so bored by it that they couldn’t even pick up the phone to tell me. 😀
Finally though, I got a copy and there it was, many pages with credits and all, plus a decent check.
(they had done a fair amount of editing to my original)Anyway, I did finally get through to the editor to ask what they thought of the story and I was told that my grammar was pretty bad, but the photos great and maybe I should do more photography.. ;D

I like high quality photos in magazines shot for the story, not picked out of stock collections.
I love a photo spread that shows the fine detail and the bigger view.
Sure, I have to say this as a photographer, but I think the pictures are as if not more important then the words.
With the writing I would rather be entertained by a good tale then bored with exact detail, but still want a good starting place if I find myself in the same situation.
National Geographic would be my benchmark for a great magazine (sorry editors on limited budgets 😮 :D) in the level of commitment to a story they have.
I like gear reviews and new gadgets in magazines, though I wonder how that will fit in with the net being so much quicker to get this stuff out.
Magazines in general need to find some middle ground with the net to survive.
A magazine should have a big net presence as well as the print page now IMHO.If advertising is a problem, I would be happy to pay more for a magazine to see that it can survive without it.
I would also pay more for a magazine with more content.I should say here that I’m not unhappy with what I’m getting out of AA, FF and Flylife here in Australia.
My favorite magazine is Top Gear ( a UK car mag ) because the photos are brilliant, and they clearly go to great lengths to get the best stories.
They also seem very honest in their reviews of new models.I realize their budgets must be huge to get the high quality, but maybe that’s the reason it sells so well around the world ?

Zach, a lot of people here wear waders more for snakes then staying dry.
The real dangerous ones here have short fangs that have channels for venom as opposed to needle like fangs and they can’t poison you through neoprene or tight thick fabrics.
(so the theory goes anyway ;))When wet wading I wear long thick socks and long pants in the hope that if a tiger bites me on the ankle (most common spot) I will live to brag about it online.
The other thing I have is a long bandage for wrapping a limb in the event of a bite to stop the venom circulating.
While most of us aren’t scared of snakes, I don’t know many Australian fisherman that don’t at least have a respect for the danger.

Interesting ramble there Will.
For many years I’ve hired assistants for my photography work and they’re expected to carry the gear, organize the gear, set up the gear, get the gear repaired and drive if I’m a bit pissed, it’s a hard job that doesn’t pay well.
But it is IMHO the best way to learn the business from the ground up and a great first step to becoming a working photographer.Most of the guys that have worked for me stay from 2 -4 years and I’m pretty sure all of them are full time shooters now, a couple do shoots with me if I need extra snappers as well.
I would call all of them friends.
One problem I find lately though, a lot of the guys that make an approach for the job want a big pay check right away even though they know nothing and haven’t any track record.
Finding the last guy I hired (3 weeks ago) was hard and I tried a few casuals before making up my mind.
Maybe this is the way young people think these days ?
Maybe they want to learn everything in the time it takes to google something then move straight to a high paid job ?
Anyway, all this has made me a big fan of the whole apprentice system because it turns out good photographers who appreciate that it’s not easy, hard work and worth every bit of effort.
Like fly fishing You can’t learn this stuff online.

If it’s cold and grey try to make that part of your pictures, photos don’t have to be sunny & blue to be good.
As a basic rule though, don’t have too much sky in the pictures if it’s really bleak.
I like to shoot a fishing trip as an adventure and capture the conditions as well as the landscape.
And food shots are important when posting!

Lugging around cameras does put a dent in the amount of tackle you can carry.
I’m down to the very minimum myself and on a small stream trip one very small flybox, clipper, knife, gink, tippet and a spare leader is about it.
Vests are cool, but not much fun in the heat with a camera pack over them.

The rod does have 2 top sections.
With the storage, the father would have been across proper storage, but his son might not know, he’s got in in the closet in it’s rod bag & tube at present.
I’ll point out to him that he should look into it.

I’m using a Low Pro Rover.

I also keep my rain jacket in a dry bag in the top section and if it rains I can put other stuff in the dry bag while wearing the jacket.
The pack has a tripod holder and 4 pockets on the outside and more pockets (of a lot of sizes) and a bottle holder can be hooked to the belt and the shoulder straps.The great thing about this pack is it’s designed for cameras and hold weight really well while a lot of the fishing stuff I’ve looked at doesn’t.
The down side is that it doesn’t have all the great little pockets for gadgets and stuff that the fishing packs have.
At the end of the day camera care wins for me..
I’m still thinking of getting one of the LL Bean ‘Rapid River’ vest packs for some trips..
