David AndersonMemberAgain, nice shot.
A bit of fill flash ?
Hard to tell in this lowrez format, but if you’re using a flash add + 1/2 a stop in the harsh sunlight.
If you’re not using a flash you should in that sort of light.
The power it has the better.

David AndersonMemberNice shot, I like the low eye level.
The color looks a little magenta on my screen – not a big deal.

David AndersonMemberHi Connor,
That’s a good start !
I love wide lenses for fishing photography, they put the viewer in the picture.
The other thing you need to cover in fishing stuff is the detail, like pix of flys and fish close up, a good lens for that is a macro from 60 – 100 MM depending on your frame size. You should learn as much as you can about Photoshop, it’s the industry standard.
A great website with heaps of tutorials:

David AndersonMemberMike,
In the ideal world you need both.A monopod for long lens work will give you a couple more stops over handheld in terms of sharpness unless the subject is really moving, but isn’t much help for landscape shots where you need big depth of field and a long exposure to blur water ect.
For that you need a tri-pod.The best setup I’ve found for fishing shots is a smallish carbon tripod ( mine is a Manrotto ) with a medium to small ball & socket head, so with the legs extended but folded it can be used like a monopod and still do normal tripod work..
It’s a very light setup and I carry it everywhere mounted to the back of my pack.
A good monopod weighs about a pound ?Carbon weights about 40 or 50 % less than alloy but costs 3 times as much ( here in Oz anyway ).
The new lenses around with image stabilisers are a good thing as well.
The Canon 70-200 F4 IS is one of the sharpest zooms ever made..www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberI get a lot of retouching work now by showing before and after using layers in Photoshop.
The trick with celebs is to keep some reality in the retouched stuff.
I find a lot of the work you see in the magazines goes to far and looks fake, womens mags are the worst for it.

David AndersonMemberAnother solution would be a small scrim.
You can get small round ones that fold up small and just pop it out to make your own shade.
They’re also much cheaper than flash. We have to use them here for no fishing work as the sun is very strong and no amount of fill flash will give you a natural looking shot.
The best ones cut the light about 50% so you might need to use ISO 200 to get your speed back up if you use longer macro lenses.www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberNice shots Mat..
Is it expensive to fish there ?
What’s the pressure like ?The fellow holding the brown looks VERY familiar, does he have a twin brother that’s Italian and lives in Australia ?

David AndersonMemberI tend to shoot no faster than 180th in the studio now because with some of my lights I get a very very faint shadow in about 1% of the frame with my cameras..
Something to do with the flash duration with studio lights.
Problem with it is that the duration changes depending on how much power you’re running through them.
I bet there’s photographers out there that really understand why that is, but I’m not one of them.. 😉 ;D

What a great site !!
What an inspiration !!!
I love that B&W Polaroid 665 film.
I’m off to the mountains for the last trip of the year and I just packed the large format Polariond gear..
Thanks for the link… 🙂

David AndersonMemberHi Ben,
I think I have some bad news for you concerning shutters.. 🙁* I know Canon – not Nikon so I may be speaking from my Butt on this.
If the shadow is always on the same side it’s the shutter or it could be flash sync speed set to high on the camera for the light’s you’re using.
1st try a slower sync speed – without knowing your lights 125 should be the slowest you need to go to loose the shadow if that’s the problem.
2nd if that’s not it – you will have to shoot wide and crop it out – if you don’t tell the client their’s no need for them to know IMO.
Do you carry a spare body ?
If not I would make it a habit as all cameras are fragile to some extent and can let you down when you need it least.
I bet it would be quicker for you to buy another D200 than get the one you have repaired if that get’s you through the job.
The shutter will fail 100% at any time once it starts bouncing like that.
Hope it works out for you.

David AndersonMemberI am starting to worry whether I need to be checking my OWN credentials at the door around here. Good lord, David – Rolling Stone, Time?
Welcome to you and we’re pleased to have you. The Aussie invasion is well underway, and we were all still picking our jaws up off the floor from Simon and Morsie’s contributions.
Zach
Thanks Zach, I don’t think you need to worry about your credentials, the photos on the front page and throughout the board are awesome..
I’m still prowling trough it all – a lot of great shots…

David AndersonMemberIt’s an Aussie/Kiwi invasion. Nice stuff guys.
Is the picture of the bass from a trip this way or is that something you guys have down there? **Edit: oops, I guess I missed your second sentence**
I see that gurglers have migrated down there too. One of my favorite topwater flies.
That’s an Australian Bass, they remind me of smallmouth except they can be a little more moody.
They’re a great target on fly and love poppers, one of my favorite late summer past times is fishing for them in small streams with a 3wt. rod.
That one in the picture is from a very remote stretch of North coast river that we rafted for 4 days to get to – it’s a big fish for a wild river at 48 cm, if it doen’t look big in the photo it’s because the guy holding it ( Gordon Low ) is a 6’5 beast.)
(Gordon caught a bigger one at 52cm later that day.)*I’ll post a some shots from the trip soon..
The Gurgler is popular here now – that shot is from a trip to Weipa.
Morsie will corect me if I’m wrong but I think he first used them down here for saltwater fish.
They sure work well, easy to cast and unlike crease flys easy to tie..www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberAwesome pix & fish Will,
Never would have thought them a flyrod target, but then again I never thought them a saltwater fish either..Here’s a saltwater catfish from Cape york I caught while chucking big flies for Barramundi in January.
