David AndersonMemberAwesome as ever Tim…
There’s certainly not many places in world where small stream trout are so big :)..
There’s one I’m dying to get back to with my Sage Bluegill rod and some heavy nymphs..

David AndersonMemberBeautiful fish and flies Jack – thanks for posting the pics.
I’ve been fascinated with swung wet flies since reading Sylvester Nemes books in the mid 80’s.
Unfortunately, in Australia, we don’t have a lot of the huge ripples that to fish that Sly likes so much.www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberHi Chris, just signed up to the BCF club and ordered the Marlin inflatable you linked – thanks for the suggestion.
In the not to distant future, I’m also going to get a proper kayak PFD for the reasons Dave mentioned about running water – not that there’s much of that around at the moment – damn drought.

David AndersonMemberThanks Chris,
Those look alright, but I was unsure if the inflatable type were a good idea for moving water ?
I suppose they would be a lot less restrictive to wear ?www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberThe Hilux ( or Hi-bux as it’s sometimes called) is, at times, the number 1 selling car in Australia.
A top of the line SR5 diesel model is between 55 and 60 K..
Personally, I think the Ford is a btter vehicle, but nothing wrong with the Hilux.

David AndersonMemberDavid, sorry to hear about your Defender, I owned one for 13 years, just sold it. Never had trouble with it, it was easy to work on and tons of fun. Just sold it so I could buy a flats skiff.
Don’t get me wrong – I loved the thing as best as I could given it’s reliability issues.
I loved the square – see every corner – build and it’s go anywhere off-road ability.
It was a loveable lemon, but a LEMON none the less..:)Out of interest, do you guys get the Ford Ranger pick-up we now have here ?
It’s big by Australian standards, but would probably fit in the bed of a 350.
That said, the diesel 6 is brilliant and they ride and handle our crappy roads well.www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberI owned a Landrover Defender for 3 years, 85, 000 K’s, 5 tow truck trips and 65 warranty claims – never again.
From what I see int reliability surveys, Jeep isn’t much better.Zach, have you (or anyone else in the US -;)) considered a diesel ?
Not sure what’s available in the US, but they’re certainly the pick over here for towing and fuel consumption. Some of the modern small diesel engines make serious grunt, but sip fuel..

Looks perfect for my new kayak ..Cheers.

David AndersonMemberHi Mark, I’ve had neoprene seat covers front and back in my 4×4 since new.
Now, almost five years on, the seats underneath are still like new and the covers still look pretty good as well.
They’re easy to fit and clean, but can be a bit warm on a very hot day.www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberInteresting article on the rods and a good topic.
Yesterday I cast my new Sage One 5 weight for the first time.
I can compare it to Sage RPL’s, RPL+’s, SP, SP+’s, XP’s, TCR’s and TCX’s, I’ve had for trout fishing over the years and can see the clear line of progress in rod design – it’s amazing.
That said, if I didn’t have enough for the One, another SP+ or just hanging on to the TCX would still be just fine – they’re both very good.My advice to new fly fishermen looking for their first rod always includes buying a good second hand top end rod over an import.
If nothing else, a classic Sage or Scott (or others) will hold their value and if/when said person goes for latest and greatest, they’re not going to lose much on the trade up.www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberZach, I really like the look of those bags and may well end up with one for my new Kayak.
The zippers are obviously a week point and I’ve noticed (over a few bags) that the zippers can separate a bit if they’re put under load from the sides.
It’s easy enough to do because unlike more heavy built bags, the waterproof stuff tends to be thin and not have much support. My Ortlieb has a weak point in the lower third of the zippers where the weight of a camera and a couple lenses stretches the base of the bag a bit.
An insert from an old camera bag has helped.
I keep the zippers well lubricated with silicone and so far haven’t had any problems in the rain. All said and done, for a few dollars and only a small weight penalty, you could carry a light dry bag rolled up in the bottom of a bag like that if the rain reaches ‘quick, build an ark’ ..

BTW, that’s a beautiful brown trout – what awesome markings !
Is that the norm on the Yellowstone ?www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberDavid, Id love to see your review of the AW-1. Where could we find that?
It’s going to run in Flylife magazine (Australia) – a quarterly – in about 3 months..
I’ll put up a link to it when I can.www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberChad, what about the Sony A7’s ?
(A bit lighter than your RB ! – lol)
They have my interest, but a buy is still out there with some more lens availability.
That said, it’s moving in the right direction.
What really holds me back is I wouldn’t want to buy into a system and then have it fade away due to a lack of interest from buyers and the manufacturer. Also, recently I did a review of the Nikon AW-1 and it’s a little ripper of a camera – WAY better than I expected given it’s size.
IMHO, it would be the pick of the ‘I’m to lazy to haul around a DSLR system fishing camera’ of the moment.Agree with you guys on the Fuji stuff – very cool – though still not quite.
Fussy ?
Hell yes !!
lolJay, that is a cool shot of the duck.
I envy the sort of patience required to get good wildlife photos..www.dsaphoto.com

I would also agree with Zach about rod weights – a 7 is a heavy hitter for trout.
