Is the z axis you were using a switch rod?
Were both rods 7wt? Similar in length?
For switch fishing do you need a specialized line?

The Z-Axis was the main rod I threw today, Simon, but the TFO is actually unmarked – I think it is a 6 weight. These rods will throw many kinds of lines, depending on their application. I was throwing a Rio 6/7 Skagit Line and dropping a fly around 120′ (40m?) away with an overhead cast. I’m not a good spey caster so I was limited to 80 feet or so, but it will pretty much handle any kind of fly appropriate for a 6 weight at those distances. I like Switch rods for the ability to aerialize big casts and make spey set-ups like the Snake roll, and for their ability to mend at long distances. Since I was pretty much using my 13′ 6/7 wt. double-hander as a switch rod anyway, this suits my purposes better. I’d really like to try one in a 5 weight, and I look forward to lining a bunch tomorrow and testing them out.

I think there are some real applications down here for some rods like that and I know of a few guys getting into it but it’s slow.
I’d be interested in your thoughts as you test a few out.

We watch developments down here with interest but do rely a little on the net. Our exposure hands on to a lot of new techniques and gear is sort of limited because of our size of populace. In saying that, we’ve a few things that have developed down here and the aussie boys are never short of a word. 😉
My favourite picture is the one where you have shot down the length of the rod. Did you use a tripod to get the water effect around the legs? Thats a slow shutter thing?This thread reminds me that there is so much water down here in the Southeast that I’ve not even looked at yet.
I figured you of all people around here would know better than to ask me about being non-offensive.
So what do those two replacement sections TFO sells for some of the TiCr X rods make?
Great series Zach, despite the fog and mist I think it added a certain mood.
There aren’t too many waters in my neck of the wood that can take Speys but they are gaining in popularity here. Its only a matter of time I think and the switch rods may just be the ticket to get more people interested.

I picked up the TiCrX conversion when it came out, and it will definitely boom some long casts out with the right line on it.
