Shannon, a 12 or 13 MP camera at full frame is just starting to go beyond the resolving power of some of the lesser lenses.
(a DX at 15mp would push them more, though it’s using the center of the lens and that’s always the best part)The new high rez Canons like the DsII and now, DsIII can out resolve the softer lenses leaving you with slightly fuzzy images, though with the sharp lenses (35 1.4L, 50 1.2L, 85 1.2L and 135 2 L) you get very high quality shots.
At work I only use prime lenses and save my zoom (I sold them all save the 16-35 II) at functions and stuff that’s not as critical.My comment was that anyone going above these resolutions we have now is going to have to have VERY sharp lenses to get sharp images.
That’s why you see everyone putting out new models and updating older ones at the moment – they don’t have a choice.

Its 90 degrees here today….not a snowflake in sight and we are gearing up to go ‘twigging’ in the mountains next week.

On my 5100 the cost of an A2 print is still much less then a cibachrome or (god, I can’t remember the term for color neg printing :-[ R51 ?) color print from neg in the same size.
Even with the commercial rental on my printer I’m way ahead.
The best thing though is that I can print stuff for my portfolio how I like it and when I feel like doing it..
Also, like when I first started printing B&W, it’s made me more aware of my shooting with a view to getting the best final outcome..

Dusty, as said above exposure compensation is very important – here in Australia out in the saltwater the light is very hard and we use more flash – like up to +1, but on a trout stream in the trees it might be -1/2.
Another trick is to get some sort of diffusion to soften the light off and make the fill look more natural.
If your flash is totally cooking frames you might also have a problem with the hot shoe on the flash or camera – it’s an easy fix at a service center.

I miss the family I still have there, some of my old friends and a pizza place, but the town itself and surrounding area are another matter.
(You can’t get a good pizza in Australia to save your life)I also really don’t miss winters in the midwest.. 😉
The fishing was ok with some good lakes nearby and a few streams with smallmouth within 2 or 3 hours drive.
When I lived there I didn’t know about the steelhead (and other runs) out of the great lakes. 🙁
It’s one of the things on my fishing list to do before meeting Elvis.

I was just going to comment that doing some printing gives digital back some of the hands on feel of B & W film.
It’s nice to hold a photo in your hand as opposed to just seeing them on the computer.

I’m with you, Chad. A couple of days ago, after this thread started, I You can’t duplicate that process or the closeness that comes with it in Photoshop. :-/

I don’t know how many of you print at home, but a big part of the ‘revolution’ is in printing.
I have a Canon 5100 printer that does awesome A2 prints in color or B & W, it’s also very easy to use and fairly cheap to run when you consider what we used to pay for big chemical prints.
The range of papers you can get is staggering, with everything from watercolor papers to high gloss being available.
Compared to a darkroom it’s a very clean process as well and very easy to do yourself at home.
Price wise the cost of the printers has come way down in the last few years, not long ago to do an A2 Dye sub you needed to spend over 100K on a printer, now they’re about 3 grand (Australian prices).
For B & W the range of options on contrast, levels and tone are endless.
While I do miss a lot of the old processes for film and hanging out at the labs shooting the breeze with other photographers, I don’t miss the bills and expenses and always owing the shop heaps of money for film.

Belly, have you tried a DT Rio Selective trout on it yet ?
I’ve been messing with one on my 3 weights and they’re really nice.F’s are awesome, the best (new) rods Scott make IMHO.
I have a feeling however that this summer is going to belong to the new ZXL #2 waiting for me down at Alpine Angler.

I was loaned a Leica M6 for a while by the importer, they wanted me to buy a system, but after testing it out on a fishing trip I came to the conclusion that it was way to slow to load and focus.
It did do very sharp shots.
Also used a Mamiya 7 and 6 and both are great landscape cameras, very light and very good quality lenses;.
I sorta still want one just for the hell of it.The best though, was the Hasselblad Xpan I had for a while – it was an amazing camera, but i didn’t use it anymore and needed the money for new digital gear.
I will always miss that one..

I used to do a lot of work in B & W for record companies and for the Australian version of People magazine.
Spent a lot of time in the darkroom on both.
Now though the only B&W film I have left is 10 packs of Polaroid 665 Pos/Neg.
They don’t make it any more and there’s nothing else like it.IMHO digital makes better B&W then film in most cases and gives the option of doing either, but i sure will miss these borders..
