MemberWill – if you are not already doing so, try rechargeable batteries. I’ve heard the 2500mah AAs NiMH recycle a flash faster than normal throw away batteries. I’ve not done actual comparisons, but believe they do recycle faster.
My canon does 5fps and with a full charge, my 580 flash can almost keep up. Some of it, though, obviously depends on the flash.

Chad SimcoxMemberwhat power setting options do you have on the SB-26? I’d think the recycle time would be pretty short at low power.
Don’t burn up your flash!

David AndersonMemberWill, not sure about that model flash, but I do know some of them don’t like hi MH batteries and sticking to 2000Mh or under is not a bad idea.
Do you have an external battery pack for your flash ?
They make the things crank – I couldn’t live without mine.
(Don’t know the Nikon model #, but I know they have them)
The other thing is to soften the flash as much as possible and get it closer, half the distance and you use half the power and shorten the recycle.
(I don’t know your set-up so please ignore the above if it’s a stupid suggestion ;))The best thing though would be to get a pro flash, they crap on the on camera stuff with great conviction from a great height and if you buy well they don’t cost much more.
Something like a second hand Elinchrom 500 ws head and small softbox would be good.
Their soft boxes have an optional diffuser or silver reflector that fits over the tube and works well for photographing small things.
I use the same setup for small objects, though not as small as what you do.
Can help you with Elinchrom model #’s and stuff if you’re interested.

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

MemberScott, I’ve actually noticed the opposite. I’ve tried several models of NiMH rechargeable batteries all ranging from 2500 to 2700 mah and they’ve all recycled slower than regular throw away batteries, they don’t last near as long before needing to be charged either. I still use the rechargeables in the flash when I’m shooting something around the house and I’m religious about using them in all the remote controls and other things I’ve got at home but I’ve gone back to throw away Duracell batteries (the “Lithium” ones) for the flashes whenever I’m out somewhere. Horrible for the environment I know (I do dispose of them properly though) but they are just more reliable. The rechargeables won’t hold their charge either, when they sit unused they drain.
