MemberHey Bill – Scott don’t make an S4s in #4 weight… You must have tried the S4 which in 9′ version weighs in at 2.8 grams.

MemberI fished with the S4 904 when I visited Colorado earlier this year. Its a great rod, more versatile than you would think. From memory it was matched with a Rio Gold. If you’re looking for a *new* rod by all means check the S4 #4 out.

MemberJust for the record, Scott no longer supply blanks – so any blanks you see for sale on the net are old stock. Custom made Scott rods are available through their Factory Custom Shop, and bear a full factory backed warranty.
If you have an old favorite Scott rod, keep in touch with your dealer or web site, as they release ‘classics’ every year. Last year it was a couple of 5 piece G’s, before that a re-run of the STS series. As far as I know, no other rod manufacturer serves up favorites from yester-year like this.

MemberI like the cork burls – I’ve used them on some grips around where your thumb sits. Sometimes on SW grips my thumb nail can wear away normal cork at the front part of a full wells over time. These burl rings seem to be a bit tougher. They look nice as a highlight too.

MemberScott have differentiated themselves for years – in their classics series they re-release (by popular demand) older models, currently some 5 piece G2’s, last year it was the STS. And in their Concept series you will find niche rods you would normally have to get custom made…
Scott was amongst (if not the) first to release 8′ Bass rods under their Concept series. The current Concept is a Fiberhammer switch rod. Not my cup of tea, but a few years back they had a ‘lead line special’ #9, and more recently the ‘back country specials’.
In the overall market, I would say Scott are leaders, not followers. Their new factory based custom shop demonstrates that their finger is still on the pulse and in recent years a lot of effort has been put into refining the products and services offered.

MemberI have the S4s #8 and #9, they are very light in physical weight without sacrificing strength or ability, have brilliant recovery and are built with the best of the non-corrosive components. They are capable of belting out a long cast as well as fishing right up close to snags. In fact, I’ll be fishign with my #8 from the beach next week, where 80′ casts with a Clouser Deep Minnow swinging off the end is pretty normal. Balance is something you need to weigh up with your whole outfit… I use Hatch or Nautilus reels on mine and have no problems. Personally, I prefer the S4s over the S3s.

MemberI rarely shop on line, but one thing that really gives me the irits is USA based shops/subscription companies that seem to think they are the only country in the world. Please make your online payment/shipping system include the rest of the planet – its very iritating choosing a product, only to find the online ordering system can’t handle your address because you live outside of the United States. And a telephone number that gets through to the shop front would help, too.

Member1) A better method of storing unused fly lines… Line winders give me the irits (cumbersome, hard ot get back on the reel in the field, most are rediculously expensive for what they are…).
Rio used to have cassette’s with a crank handle, which was great but for the small diameter of the cassette’s – if these were available in large arbor I’d be all over them. 😉
2) Buffs with a hole for my nose, so my sunglassess don’t fog up with every breath… 🙁 Come to think of it, scissors will sort that one out… ;D
3) Reel seats with custom laser etching – whatever you want (name, fish, company logo…)

MemberHi Shane,
I use the Scott A3 8′ #8 here in Australia – mostly for short to medium accurate casts to cover. I can still cast it 60-70 feet without any dramas, probably further if I bothered to use a different line – but you will probably be able to cast further with a 9′ rod. I’ve been using the SA Redfish Taper or SA Sharkskin Magnum – both match well.
I highly recommend looking at the new S4S or the slightly more affordable X2S nine footers from the Scott range – both amongst my favorites (#8 weights are ‘go to’ rods for me…).
Whatever your choice, it sounds like you’re going to be getting into some great fish!

MemberI know a guy here in Australia that is doing somehting similar with a weed guard arrangement – you need to have a tool die machined up, then have an injection molder who can do the job with the right compound. Down here its had to get someone to tool up for such small quantities on an injection molder. I say down here sitting in a hotel in Utah… VBG
I do remember a company from the US some years ago that sold molds for those seafoam poppers, which you could buy in a kit. I presume any good art&craft store should have some kind of latex mold making kits that you could adapt to flies for small quantities.

MemberZach, I’m naturally drawn to the technical podcasts – the tackle industry insiders and ‘whats new’. I agree with Mike Anderson – an update on the latest gear every six months would be really great. Guess I’m a bit of a tackle rat ;).
Its always great to hear a little history from someone who has been around the block a few times.
You know what would make a good podcast? Turn the tables and have someone interview you…

MemberMy vote would go to the Scott S4s – this rod does everything, including throwing big poppers or long casts into the wind.
A close second is the Scott X2s – I bought this rod before I joined Scott, and chose it over and above most of the top line rods available in its day which I also owned (I had a thing for #8 weights… :-[).
The best thing you can do is go cast a bunch, have a break then think of the rod you’d pick up first to go fishing.

MemberZach, I travel a bit with work and its a pleasure to subscribe to the podcasts through iTunes – gets my mind back to things I”d rather be doing when I’m not… Your podcasts are nearly as good as your articles, which always read well by the way.
Keep up the great work!
