MemberMike,
I always seem to get line cuts from tightening up leaders before I get them from fly lines. I now use a product called Vet-Wrap on my stripping finger to prevent cuts. It’s a bandage for pets which sticks to itself but doesn;t have adhesive.I’ve been using Sharkskin lines since they were released and the magnum is my favorite taper by far… I have the #7 and #10 which I use to huck big bulky surface flies and have no complaints.

MemberYeah… Great! Thanks, Zach. I really was looking forward to sleeping tonight, but now I’ll be awake till the wee hours pondering this post!
Really looking forward to your article, though – you’ve penned some of the best I’ve read.

MemberShane,
I have the WW #6 weight, which I use for bass, perch and bream down here in Australia. I love this rod – it’s great for accurately throwing big flies. The #6 is well behaved and clean casting – it feels a lot to me like the HP series of years past. We commonly cast in amongst timber and under jetty’s/around moorings etc. I’ve cast the #8 and the action felt identical, but haven’t seen the #10 yet.
I just use standard fly lines, no problems. The fish below is a black bream from the Melbourne area, using a WF#6I Rio Aqualux on the Scott WW #6 – caught in tight amongst the snags.
Agree with many of the comments regarding using standard rods for this kind of work… They work fine too. The A3 is a med/fast action but you can’t get one in 8′. The shorter rods are real handy in tight quarters though, and if you want to enter tournaments.
Best advice is to try as many as you can and get the rod (s) that suit you best.

MemberGreat fly, Clark! Interesting you’ve had the same experience using orange as I have… Some Americans suggested using yellow – apparently Mako’s love yellow – have you tried yellow yet?

MemberI’ll chime in with the S4 as well. I’ve found the SA Expert Distance taper to be a good match for me. Go cast one and you’ll see why the S4 is so highly regarded.

MemberWayne, the Struble U15 HG fits the Scott A2 blanks very well – I got the ‘blue’ which is more like gunmetal grey, a good match for the blank.

MemberTake a look at the Scott X2S908/4 – one of my all time favorite #8’s. You might also pick up an E2908/4 on sale – both are good rods that will cut the mustard in fresh or salt water, and you’re supporting an American manufacturer.

MemberReturn it to Sage and get an authorised repair. You bent the guides, forced them back and obviously have damaged the chrome plating. Bend any guide enough, and it will get damaged. Even RECoils.

MemberHonestly, the difference between a 5 or a 6 weight (or between an 8 or a 9) nowadays is actually less than the difference between a “5 weight” made by some manufacturers and a “5 weight” made by others.
Zach – you mention that within earshot of my wife, and you’re toast, buddy! ;D
