Guys, I’ve decided to sell off a couple of my “extra” rods (G Loomis 3wt GL3 & 9wt GLX) and use the $$ to buy a 5wt rod.

Rich, the Scott S4 905-4 is a great rod. It casts very smooth at all distances and has a very sensitive tip. I liked it much better as an all around rod than the G2 885-4 that I previously owned. I love the G2 series in the smaller weights, but feel the S4 would be hard to beat in the 5-7 weights.

I’ll second Dustin on the S5 9′ or 8 1/2′ 5wt. Very smooth, truly progressive action and the lay up uses several different graphite blends to give you high line speed, but a tip that still has ‘feel’ in close and protects lighter tippets.

Dustin, been to the Toccoa lately?

Juan, did you stick with a matching Rio Grande line with the rod or did you size up?

All – thanks for your insights.

    Rich,

    I put a 5wt line on it.

Have you already sold the GLX, if not how much do you want for it?

I’ll chime in with the S4 as well. I’ve found the SA Expert Distance taper to be a good match for me. Go cast one and you’ll see why the S4 is so highly regarded.

    Best Regards,

Look at the Winston and Helios before you buy.

See, I’d go the other direction.

I’ve had my S4 for a few months now and I love it! Powerful but forgiving – not like some of the “broom sticks” being sold today. It does have a pretty sensitive tip for such a cannon!

Rich Miller…I’ve got to side with Zach on his thoughts of the G2.

Rich Miller…I’ve got to side with Zach on his thoughts of the G2.  If I were going to go to the “dark side of graphite” (EEEKKKK!  HA…) a Scott G2 would be where the search would start and end.

    I’ll third that call.

I’ve taken recent possession of a G2 8’8 4wt and its holding its own amongst a host of other great rods.

    I’d look for a G on ebay, if not I would grab a G2.
