MemberI’m interested to see the taper profile of your lines, Mike. The taper is far more important to most people than colour. As you know, the taper is what makes the line perform on the water and the mass of the line is what carries the fly. I’m also interested in the stiffness of the line. Are they suitable for tropical use in saltwater? Or just for temperate use in freshwater?
BTW, I’m not being critical, just telling you what makes me make a decision on which line to buy. I’ll bet a bunch of folks here would do the same. Price isn’t a consideration for me.
Something like this would be handy:

MemberHey Shadow,
Do you make a WF6F line? I went to your web site and it showed #5 and #8 lines.

MemberThat’s very true Dave – there isn’t any lip around the casting decks to prevent line blowing over the side. And I wouldn’t want to be in one in rough weather. But for sheltered water, can’t be beat. If I was buying a boat like this for myself I’d be looking at a ‘bay’ style of boat. But hey – I get around in a Savage 435 Bay Cruiser that I’ve tidied up for fly fishing. With good line management its not a drama (I use a tub like Zach posted). I checked this out last time I got the engine serviced – 5.1m package is $23k on the water with a Merc 60hp 4s

Very basic but a good foundation and sits a little higher than a float tube. And you don’t cry when you crunch a rock 😉Best Regards,

MemberIt sat bum heavy with a Suzuki 85hp, and listed to the side because of the side console. Worst of all, the engine could turn more one way than the other because of the transom design (the engine fouled the transom when turning to starboard). Plus I found the whole shape of the inside a little uncomfortable… No side decks to brace against so if you ended up against them you would be about to flip out of the boat. No outboard well on the transom either – old mate said he copped a green one over the back in fairly calm conditions.
Hey, build quality was there and I know Scotto loves ’em – but pretty unrefined when you compare it to the US boats. Dave’s new Maverick was just terrific.

MemberA mate bought one of those – can’t say I was very impressed. Have you spoken to Dave Bradley?

MemberGoogle “tarpon boat Australia” and you’ll see a picture of a small open skiff not too dissimilar to the one that Zach posted – made in Australia by someone on QLD (can’t remember who). There’s one down at Millbrook Lakes. Maybe Phil Weigall or Jon Clewlow can point you in the right direction?

MemberSo many businesses fail to respond to email enquiries, which is a reflection on the failure of HR to hire compentent people, not social media.
I am only on FB to peddle my fly tying business and for the most part resist posting photo’s of my breakfast, venting about politics and selfies of myself in the mirror.
As a ‘free’ marketing tool it has been useful, but I was of the belief that all my “friends” saw everything that I posted. If FB are filtering the exposure and there is no way of measuring it, well – it kind of says its a waste of time. Costs to ‘boost’ posts really don’t stand up against the cost to sponsor an internet forum for 12 months, where the target audience is very specific.
An interesting read, Zach – thanks for the heads up.

MemberI agree with Steve… A camo non-cotton shirt would be great!
You guys wear drawers when fishing…?

MemberZach, Harfin is an Aussie made reel about to hit the market (look up Harfin Reels Australia on Facebook). First run of #7/8 sized reels will be out by Christmas and most have been pre-sold.
Here’s some photos of one of the prototypes we fished in September. Since this trip the design has been tweaked to reduce quite a lot of weight (not that these were heavy to begin with!) and they brought their anodizing in-house and improved the quality off the planet. The first two shots are from Ashleigh Dunsmore’s Facebook page, of the new anodize finish on the production reels.
Totally sealed stacked multi-disc drag that is butter smooth, large arbor narrow spool design. I believe Ash will be offering custom colour combinations.

And good weather, its time for deep water snapper on fly…

MemberIsn’t Rajeff Sports the distributor in the US?

MemberYes, but the market for that sort of thing is small here. There are a greater number of boats suitable for convential tackle, some are pretty good for fly fishing. Most are deeper hulled to handle different conditions. Some of the guides have very good setups, very very few fish shallow flats like Dave Bradley does at Hinchinbrook.

MemberAt the end of the day there have been some try hard attempts that just don’t provide the level of refinement of the US boats. Which is why some guys that fly fish a lot and have experienced a well designed boat are importing theirs.

MemberSure are Mike! Barra fill in the time between peak permit/goldie tides. All sight fished out of the mangroves… Awesome fun! (particularly on a #6 Aussie Special!)

MemberI was really suprised at how well Dave’s (Maverick 18′) and Troys’s (Dolphin 16′) boats handled chop. Smooth ride and dry… And fast. I wouldn’t get one for fishing Port Phillip Bay, but if I lived up there…

MemberHey Zach, we have a growing ‘flats boat’ culture where there are flats… Like Hervey bay and Hinchinbrook Island in Queensland. Great boats to fish from! Australian Flyfishing Outfitters has two or three flats boats (Maverick & Hewes), and some local keen fisho’s have their own (Hewes, Dolphins, Mavericks) so they are becoming more common.
I’m the last person to ask about specific fish species, but I know we have two kinds of permit… Anak and Blocchi. Apparently one is considered easier to catch than the other, but to me they are all elusive (until next time…)
The Aussie Special is one of Scott’s S4S series – a 8′ #6 weight. Its a lovely rod, I really like it. Ask Jim about it, he’s using one…

MemberZach, FlyLife has been published in Australia since spring 1995 and is still going strong. As opposed to Fly Life Magazine which is a different entity in the US.
FlyLife has since 1995 covered some salt in every issue, maybe 30% of the content.Best Regards,
