MemberI have the #6 and #8, and fished the #8 quite a bit in northern Australia last month. The #8 handles toads and whistler style flies in #2/0, and extracted some great fish out of mangrove roots… More importantly, the rod can easilly be controlled for trick casts in under branches etc – smooth, super tight loops if you can drive the rod. I matched it with a Airflo Ridge Tropical Clear Tip floater and it was a really nice combo that was hard to put down. Later at Magnetic Island I fished the flats with this rod, and it handled some weighty crab/shrimp flies well.
A mate fished with the #7 on the flats at Magnetic Island and said it was the smoothest #7 he had ever cast. He thinks its the perfect CI bonefish rod but thats a prett subjective comment.

MemberMy number one choice on the flats is a reel with a sealed synthetic drag system. Harfin and Hatch are my choices. Second is a good fanny pack/sling that can hold a couple of fly boxes, tippet, tools, and a bottle of water. Currently the Simms Headwaters chest/hip pack or the minimalist JW Outfitters bonefish pack (which is on its last legs now).

MemberZach,
I also cast the #6 weight, which I thought was a terrific all-rounder. I have the #5 and #6 on the way and looking forward to stretching them next season!

MemberZach, check the voltage. You should be getting 12.8vdc roughly on those lights. And it might sound simple but check the light bulbs are 12v too. The problem could also be on your vehicle, maybe a dud join in the wiring harness or coupling? My trailer has LED lights – might be an option for you as these are often multi-voltage compatible.

MemberThe best rods to get are the ones that suit your style the best. There is no substitute for trying as many as you can before you buy.

MemberNo frustrations here – its just a fact of life. As far as I am concerned, the sharing of fly patterns is what its all about. Best of luck to Tenkara USA, but I suspect the lawyers will be the only winners.

MemberIt happens to fly tyers every day of the week. Cheap copies ripped off and peddled on the internet or copied by tying factories and sold under a different name.

Memberhey Dave – I’ve been looking at the Fishcat Scout. Same as you though – no opportunities to look at this gear in Oz. Remember 20 years ago when every shop had float tubes? Not so these days! Dropped into Bob Marriotts and they only had a limited number of inflatables too. Difficult decision to fork out the coin – as the classifieds show on the Aussie forums.

MemberNice review. Now all we need is one just like it on 9′ #5 weight rods. Then 9′ #8 weight rods… Then… ;D
C’mon Zach, you know you want to…

MemberDepends on your definition of better. Faster, quicker recovery – yes. Depends on what you like in a rod…

MemberFantastic reels – I have a 5+ that I use on #5 and #6 weight rods and 7+ that I use for #8 and #9 weight rods. All large arbor spools, loaded with GSP FINS backing.

MemberI use one. I don;t wade past waist deep with it. I only have two problems with it. 1) it will slip down while walking, so have to use the shoulder strap and 2) the leftover belt strap keeps coming loose as you swing the bag around your waist to access the ocmpartments. Minor issues, otherwise it has enough room for everything you need without taking too much (the reason I no longer use vests), it looks cool, and I look cool wearing something with Simms written on it ;D.
