The Itinerant AnglerOctober is fishing month, but I didn’t anticipate that when October got here, I’d be doing *quite* so much fishing.
Last week, I flew to San Diego with the partners from the firm I work for (Hicks, Casey, and Foster) for a trucking industry conference called TIDA (we defend some trucking clients).

MemberMakos’ are sick. I managed to get a couple of shots of them in the air when Simon Chu hooked one in NZ a few years ago.

Bob RigginsMemberWe don’t have makos much in inshore waters, but spinner sharks and black tips will do the same thing. If you think that was fun, try it out of a kayak. The ride is great, but landing them can be a challenge.

Chad SimcoxMemberAwesome trip. I don’t know what I would do if I hooked into a toothy shark. Maybe pray that it would break off close to the boat! If/when I give surf fishing a shot again I would love to catch a leopard shark, but I’ll leave it at that with sharks.
Mat M, those are some cool shots. The shark looks plastic in that first shot. I love the soft light through the marine fog, it makes everything look so surreal.
Bob, thats just crazy. That sounds way too dangerous to me. I couldn’t imagine one of those leaping into the kayak with me! Earlier this year I read an article in the L.A. Times about a guy fishing for marlin out of a kayak down off the coast of San Diego. Apparently the marlin pull him around for over a mile and all he can do is hang on for the ride.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

MemberVery nice … Sounds like you had an awesome time! Going out with Bowan and company is one of the absolute best fishing experiences I have had! Can’t wait to see your photos!

MemberNice Zach. Conway is speaking at one of the clubs I am a member of in Dec. Can’t wait for the presentation. I’ve a couple friends who went out with Conway shortly after Corey’s trip and they had a blast. Looking forward to the pics.
The makos look fun, but blues have been my favorite shark since I was a kid in Huntington Beach.
Chad, I’ve never flyfished the surf but a friend of mine (Randy on the Kern board) caught a very nice leopard his first trip surf fishing: http://www.kernriverflyfishing.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1184030702
Very cool looking shark and one I would definitely like to go after when I finally try the surf.Oct 6, 2008 at 10:18 pm #29819

MemberI am not trying to hijack the thread but this mako was hooked off the Texas coast while snapper fishing…look at the holes in the ocean behind him. What an incredible fish!! I need to chase those on the fly. Great report.

The Itinerant AnglerLike I said, I was constrained on my lens choice and we were pressed for time, so I didn’t get any jumping shark shots, but we did get a few blues in the boat.

Richie pulling on that ninety pound mako.

Captain Dave Trimble demonstrates how to sink a hook into a mako’s jaw.

MemberOne of the best aerial displays I’ve ever seen was from this Mako I caught off Melbourne last Christmas.

clark reidMemberMakos have been on my “to do” list for some time and last year we had them in plague proportions around here… Our problem was finding one of a size we were prepared to cast at from my little boat (18ft ocean skiff). The biggest was at least 2.5 – 3 meters and the smallest about 2 meters…
This summer we’re on the lookout for something in the 50 – 100lb range.
This one we didn’t bother with….
You can judge a man by the size of things which annoy him.
