Hey Zach – you made a comment in this podcast that intrigued me, about using a Skagit line for stripers… Can you elaborate?

My bad Tim – haven’t had an issue with the mastery textured lines. They clean up just fine. But the sharskin (I’ve been using the magnum) stains badly and I can’t seem to get rid of the stain.

Any pointers to getting algae stains out of textured lines? The SA pads failed to remove the algae stain from a sharskin line…

I use SA Bonefish lines most of the time, but also the SA Redfish for snag bashing and the SA Striper IV as a sinking line. Others that match well are the Bermuda Triangle Taper Ghost Tip and Airflo Ridge Tarpon.

The X2S is a pretty versatile rod, they will handle a wide variety of lines and flies – and they are tough, too. I have fond memories of the #9:

Actually that mako in the shot above took the fly with all the delicacy of a trout taking a nymph. The fly was fed down the side of a berley trail and I was catching a lot of squid on it. The squid ‘take’ was like a gentle pull on the line. I thought I had another squid take and yanked back pretty hard on this occasion (sick of catching squid…), then the line took off at some speed and we got treated to a mako missile show! The little fella was hanging back just out of sight picking off the squid that were attracted to the trail.

I’ve had some success on orange flies tied to represent squid.

Dyna King are my favorite vice. I tied well over 100,000 flies on my Prince before I upgraded to the Proffessional model. Looking forward to their new catalog now!

I think it would make an interesting story in a magazine – particularly if it was a bonefish or exploratory trip to some of the old Pacific bases used in WWII. I’m guessing local governments might consider chipping in some of the costs to increase tourism exposure as well?

I couldn’t leave home to fish a stream without some Au Sable Wulff’s. Likewise the Clouser Deep Minnow in salt water.

I use plenty of salt water rods in fresh water – to cast big flies or in bad conditions.

I really like your podcasts, Zach – but I’ll be ‘the voice in the wilderness’ here – I don’t share your taste in music! It won’t stop me from listening to the content though.

    Hi Peter,

The new web site has a cool feature – if you click on the actual rod model you are interested in, the dialog for that rod appears on the right so you get an idea of what that model was designed to do.

I really appreciate the craftsmanship in cane rods, and have cast some fine examples of short, light Australian made tapers that are delightful to cast. I’d love to buy one for light stream work, wading in tight quarters and small delicate casts but I’m afraid I’m with Zach – they just aren’t on my financial radar for a while.

They have a growing cult-like following in Australia with a vibrant cottage industry of craftsmen, mostly used in ‘twig’ waters.

It adds an international flavour to any bulletin board, allows anglers to hook up and exchange information and friendship freely. The only disadvantage I can think of is the occasional misunderstanding where emoticons and active moderators would probably be of greater advantage!
