I’m beginning the quest for a new 9 ft 5 wt rod to be used primarily for fishing from a drift boat in the west (shorter casts but mends very well and handles some wind) and from my drift boat on the Delaware (> 70 ft). I have

Red Truck 9′ 5wt Diesel.  Great tip feel, strong butt section.  All those recent dry fly delaware fish of mine were caught on it.

Or why not a 6wt?  My scott S3s 6wt is the bomb for drift boat fishing.  LOOOOONG casts are not a problem and better mending ability and line control with a heavier line.

9ft 6in 5wt TCX would be loverly for that sort of fishing.

The Helios is a sweet drift boat fishing rod.

The Scott S4 905/4 would be perfect for you!

Interesting comments, guys! I was actually looking at the Helios, TCX and Scott S4 – all in 9 ft 5 wt! Guess I’ll have to cast them make up my own mind!

Dave, I usually have two 6 wt rods in the boat. A Winston 9 ft 6 wt LT for wind, and a 9 ft 6 wt streamer rod with a tip. Delaware browns love white Sex Dungeons!

I personally love both the Z-axis and the Scott S4 in the 5-6wt line class.  If I was pushed to pick a favorite (and it would be very close) I would choose the Scott S4, like Chris mentions above.  However, I don’t fish 5wt rods, but I do own a 6wt Z-axis and a 6wt Scott S4; the later was recently given to me in a trade and I have fallen in love with that rod.

edit: I also love the 7wt Scott S4s for streamer fishing (and for bonefish/redfish in low-wind conditions).

I’m gonna cast a vote for Loomis streamdance HLS…little pricey but i have a 9ft 5 wt and love it…i fish everything with it…dries, nymphs, streamers…(although if the main objective is streamer fishing i pull out the 6wt gl3…thats a great get muddy rod.

I floated the South Fork of the Snake last year for a full week in late August using mostly hopper-dropper rigs.

And possibly 10 feet instead of 10 inches?

To me, boat rods are something that are work horses and I could care less if they get beat up. A lot of nice rods have been listed, but I like those Ross rods. The FC is a nice stick for the price and I could care less when the dog steps on it and breaks the thing.  But it sounds like maybe you should be looking at a nice 8 wt. tossing those streamer rigs. Makes for an easier day, that’s for sure.

No one mentioned the Sage VXP. I know the XP was – and still is very popular – but one doesn’t hear much about it’s successor.
