MemberMy bad Tim – haven’t had an issue with the mastery textured lines. They clean up just fine. But the sharskin (I’ve been using the magnum) stains badly and I can’t seem to get rid of the stain.
Best Regards,
Beechy

Michael PhillippeMemberZach,
Great analogy! Except ‘scraping’ the plaque off a high-gloss finish on a wooden boat is a bit tricky.

Don’t scrape it. Spray a little muriatic acid on it and it will rinse off with water.
Also I’ve found that this stuff http://www.twinsrecreation.com/fs04873.html is AMAZING at getting scum stains off of fiberglass (especially white). I found it two years ago and it’s hands down the most impressive boat cleaner I’ve ever used. My white boat gets brown scum stains all along the water line. I used to have to buff it out with a buffer. Now I wipe this stuff on and wash it off with a brush and like magic the stains are gone. I have no idea how or why it works but it does. If you have a white glass boat with stains you really should try this stuff.

That stuff may be kinda like the kitchen cleaners I use, especially Formula 409.

MemberZach,
I use a Wonder Cloth to clean my fly lines.

Michael PhillippeMemberI have for many years taken my lines off the reels, washed them in regular dishwashing detergent and stored them for the winter on a large diameter spool I made. (A shoe box works really well too). It’s amazing how this prolongs the life of a ($80) fly line!
MIke, think I’ll pass on spraying muriatic acid on my boat!

Peter E.Memberhey Tim I was going to ask, I take a five gallon bucket and fill it half way up with HOT water and add a a couple of drops of original dawn to the water as it fills then I soak my line in the water for a few hours. After it soaks I use a patch of felt and reel the line through the felt pad. I repeat that part a couple of times then I empty the bucket and fill it half way up with cool clean water and let the line soak in it for a while before I reel it back on the spool.
Is that an ok way to go? I am using Saltwater Mastery line and then I will use a line treatment on it. Usually either Umpqua’s Glide or SA’s fly line dressing.
I hope that I am not damaging my line or that this advice I have given friends has not hurt their lines either.

MemberNope – you’re not harming the line a bit.

Tim, there was a time that SA and Rio recommended against the use of detergents on fly lines. Has that changed?

MemberDetergents are not nearly as good as hand soap – a bar works best.
