Chad SimcoxMemberNice Adam, I dig that 2nd shot. It looks like 160VC with the high contrast from the drug store scans. Contrasty, but still has that Portra feel to it.

Chad SimcoxMemberJust make sure to check the generation schedule if you plan on wade fishing without a guide.

Chad SimcoxMemberWow I never knew there were loons at Percy Priest. Then again I never spent any time on the lake, just riding at the BMX track.
Looks like a killer way to spend an afternoon. I’m jealous!
I went in search of them running up the Stones River a few times but never could come across any at the few wade fishing spots I found.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberI bought my first digital P&S this year and I’m really happy with it. It honestly has become my carry around camera that I use most of the time. I recently took a vacation to Sequoia National Park and barely used my DSLR the entire time since I was mostly shooting snap shots. I got some great shots on it too! I do miss the manual controls of an SLR or Compact camera, but it’s really not that big of a deal for me.
That said, the jump into the SLR game can be a fun one. It can also get frustrating and expensive depending how far down the path you go. The major manufacturers are going to all have comprable gear.
You may want to pick up a P&S camera now though, that market is going to start hurting in the next year or two. Smartphones have taken a big chunk out of the P&S market and your options may become a bit more limited in the not too distant future.

Chad SimcoxMemberD I can remember climbing in the Tetons a few years ago and filing our water bottles straight out of the ground. But then again, we were at ten thousand feet…way out of range of beaver pee.
Not a good attitude to take. I’ve seen Elk, Deer, Marmot, Pika, Trout, Birds and Humans all well above the treeline (13,000’+) They all have to pee and poop somewhere and that can get into the water you’re drinking.
Lately I have been forgetting to carry water and pay for it. I feel like crud and am exhausted walking a few miles out after a long day of walking and fishing. I have a few camel back bladders that I need to put into my bags/vest. Otherwise I sometimes carry my awesome Guyot Designs waterbottle. It’s stainless, durrable as hell, and doesn’t get that funky nalgene or camelback taste.
I have a MSR waterworks filter that fits nalgene bottles, but I’m concerned with contamination from mines, fertilizers/trash from marijuana growers, or whatever other pollutants there could be here in CA’s waters. In Colorado I used it all the time for getting water while camping or fishing.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberLast night I was playing around in Photoshop trying to come up with a vintage film look. This is what I came up with (mind the graphic vector over the image)

Notice the foliage in the foreground. What I did was use an adjustment layer and over saturate the Red, Yellow and Green channels. I then added more adjustment layers to address the contrast, curves and overall image saturation. I also added a sepia or warming filter over the top (can’t remember which).

Chad SimcoxMemberOlder film stocks may be tough to emulate with the modern films. That looks kodachrome to me, but tough to say from the scans.
I’d say go with a consumer film like Kodak Gold 400. Fuji’s consumer film may work as well. You’re looking for high contrast, low but compressed saturation and a bit of grain. Maybe AGFA Vista film would work as well. If you can find some Kodak Portra 400VC, that would give you the contrast you want. Then new Portra is going to be a bit low grain.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberSince rainbows are genetically the same as steelhead, I guess it’s not too terribly misleading…
Now if it were here in SoCal and the menu said “local, wild steelhead” then I’d be making some phone calls to find out why an endangered subspecies were on a menu!

Chad SimcoxMemberPosting another one ofmy other daughter. Used the center focus point on her face (not 100% sure where).
It’s hard to tell from such a small photo, but it looks like the fleece on her jacket is in focus. So maybe you’re focused a bit too deep. Which would make sense if you had some back focus issues.
Just a tip, try to make sure you’re shooting with a 1/90 shutter speed or faster if you’re hand holding your camera. That will reduce the chance for motion blur. It has a different look than being out of focus, but will contribute to an overall softness of a photo.

Chad SimcoxMemberI remember someone telling me that carp fishing is really good at Walter Hill dam in the spring.
The lack of noise is really impressive at those ISOs. I remember when I first started shooting digital I was impressed at how 800+ ISO had so little grain compared to films at that speed that I was blown away. It’s amazing how far the technology has come.

Chad SimcoxMemberMy brother did this over in Alabama, they even cooked one up and said it tasted pretty good. I like the head of the fly. I almost wonder if it would be beneficial to have tippet thread through the cap and tie in on the inside to protect the not from the teeth… just a thought from someone who has never gone after gar on the fly.
