Chad SimcoxMemberAnother dead give away of photoshopped reflections is perspective. If you’re shooting down on something, then the reflection would be from a perspective below the object. Notice in Zach’s photo, you can see into the bottom side of the spool and reel seat. If you want to fake it properly, it’s going to require 2 shots from opposite angles.

Chad SimcoxMemberWhy do the prep shots have to be shot on the same day as the hunt? If you take the “scaring the birds” problem out of the situation I think it would help a lot. Plus you could ad flashes to your arsenal and get some light on your subject to cut down on motion blur.

Chad SimcoxMemberTo be honest, I’m probably going to see if I can sell this one. It is designed to work with non internal focus lenses, but it’s proved to be almost impossible to get a autofocus shot to work due to pressure against the front of the lens.

Chad SimcoxMember#3 and #7 are the best ones. #1 is almost there, but you need a bit of the shoulder in there to ground the arm. As it is now it just looks like a floating arm hanging on to the rod.
Good job, you’ve got some nice shots there.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberGive Sorensen Squeeze a try for making sorensen compressed quicktimes. Or if you have a good way to convert to H.264 QT that would be a good option. Otherwise look to convert to flash. Brightcove seems to do a good job if you’re looking for an online service.

Chad SimcoxMemberI’ve got 2 as well, but my 5wt seems to feel worn out when I cast it now. I’ve had it for probably 7 years. Maybe it’s just my mind playing tricks on me to get me to buy a new rod…
That said, those 2 St. Croix rods are my only 2 fly rods. I like the feel and weight of them. I’ve landed a few 20″ plus fish on them in all seasons and they’ve held up pretty good. I did recently break the tip off my 5wt (not sure how, it was broke when I pulled it out of the rod case). I just put a new top guide on it and it still casts great.

Chad SimcoxMemberThanks guys!
I’m really liking the first one I posted. It’s fun to go back and look at shots with refreshed eyes and remember what you shot. I’ve got a few other good ones from the shoot that I liked that are along the same lines.
Kevin,
I was really going for an illustration style, I’m glad you picked up on that. For some reason I’m drawn to the clean/glossy high tech style when used with bass or other non-fly fishing products. So I figured I’d try to shoot some bass fishing lures in that style. I haven’t built up a tacklebox full of lures, so I only have 4 crankbaits and one inline spinner. I used to have a few large boxes full of lures back at my parent’s house, but for some reason they’re pretty much empty now. I’m sure it’s un-related, but my dad’s tackle boxes seem to have gotten a bit heavier than I remember…By the way, an umbrella holder on a light stand will secure the top section of a spinning rod quite nicely. 😉
I used 2 Sunpak 383 flashes. One fired into a wescott 43″ umbrella from camera left and the other bare onto the background paper from camera right. Shot with Canon 20D and 50mm f2.5 Compact Macro lens.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberDon’t forget smallmouth fishing around PF and Sevierville. I’ve caught a few ones right in town on poppers and clouser minnows.

Chad SimcoxMemberCost effective rod? Thats rod is out of my price range, maybe I’m more hardcore than they are. I’ll just press play on my ipod and listen to thrash while I fish. ;D

Chad SimcoxMemberDon’t let Ron play with the fire, someone’s likely to loose an eye.
I used to fish at Happy Hollow quite a bit. I loved fishing that stretch of the river, though it was usually predictable as far as where to catch fish and what to use. I think at one point I had Eat At Chucks filling up half my fly box.
Looks like a fun trip.

Chad SimcoxMemberThis morning when I initially saw the post I first thought he must have used gradient filters, but then I couldn’t see any dividing line or anything that truly indicated that is what he was using.
Thanks for sharing, his seascape photos are amazing. It’s obvious these shots aren’t from the states, because there is no garbage on the beaches.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberJust a thought, the software is capable of displaying millions of colors on the proper hardware. Not sure what the color space of a cinema display is, but maybe you can get millions out of it. I could be wrong, but that kind of makes sense to me. By the way, I didn’t know my MBP had a 6-bit display.

Chad SimcoxMemberThanks for the comments. These are some of the first salt water flies I’ve tied up, definitely not as meticulous as Asian tied flies. The eyes were pre-painted, so the quality control for that company was low I guess. I don’t mind it, they should still work the same.

Chad SimcoxMemberplaces like mpix, WHCC and other internet digital printers do have metalic paper options. Apparently black and white prints on the stuff looks really good. I haven’t tried it yet or seen a print in person.

Chad SimcoxMemberWow thats a lot of water! I never made it over there when I lived in TN. We always went to the Little Red or the Spring River where a friend has a cabin. I’m surprised at how blue the water is in the lake and the river below the dam. With as much rain that has come though I’d expect the water to be heavy in sediment.
I think photo #16 would make for an interesting high contrast black and white image.
How long of a duration are the flood gates open? Have you noticed that fish tend to be able to hold in some of the same areas when a large discharge of water like this happens?http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberI always preferred my 9′ rod when fishing the smokies. I have a 7’9″ 4wt that I bought to use in the smokies, but found that I couldn’t get as good of a drift with it. Then again, the short rod was ideal for hiking in and scrambling along the stream.
