I got into some hopper fishing this past weekend as well. It was a blast. Best thing was, they fish wanted the fly skated instead of on a dead drift. Because I was using a foam hopper, it stayed buoyant. Had I used something like a Dave’s Hopper, it would have drowned and been useless.

I know the local Jackson Kayaks dealer in Denver has the Jackson SUPs and other manufacturers on close out right now. Maybe check your local paddle shop and see if they are unloading the 2014s or demo models since the 2015s are on their way.

Check the regulations for fishing down there from a SUP. It is considered a watercraft and I believe you have to be a certain distance off the shore to fish. Some guys got busted for fishing too close to shore off SUPs in Long Beach I believe. Not sure if it was an MLPA or not.

In the surf I always used an 8wt with a 300grain sink tip line and a straight 15lb flouro leader of about 5-7 ft. It really helped keep the mole crab flies down in the wash.

Make sure you give your gear a good fresh water rinse after you‘re done using it for the day.

Just a note, these DJI quadcopters don‘t float. One of our shows sunk one down in Baja on a shoot. The manufacturer is developing a floatation option though.

I‘ve fished Mission Bay for bay and sand bass. Once I figured the presentation out and where to target, they were pretty easy to catch; and a lot of fun! My best luck came on shrimp patterns, fished on the bottom with short strips. Try Crown Point off Ingraham St.
Corbina, that‘s another story! I haven‘t fished the surf in SD, but I did quite a bit in LA. Beans never wanted to play with me, which is really frustrating when you find them sliding up the beach at dawn. But I have had a lot of luck catching surf perch on clousers and surf rats. SNGF and Leopards seemed to always like merkins or other crab patterns.

I’m jonesing to get back out there myself.

I bought the updated G4 Guide boots with rubber soles that came out this year. I haven‘t put studs in the boots yet, and havent found that I really need to. The soles are now a softer rubber compound compared to the previous versions, so they grip a bit better. Thats not to say that all rocks are sticky, I have encountered some slippery ones for sure. But I haven‘t taken a dunk yet.

I‘ve talked to several guys in fly shops that sell Korkers, and they all didnt recommend them. A few have stopped carrying them because they had so many pairs returned due to defects.

I drive an outback as well. It‘s a great fly fishing vehicle. AWD, handles off road and the snow pretty well, nice long body with a lot of storage and room to take along fishing buddies, dogs and gear. I love being able to hit a few different spots and not have to break down my 9‘ rod. Plus my one piece 7‘ baitcasters fit no problem (cant say the same for my Ford Ranger). Rear seats fold down flat, so you can easily sleep in it if need be. The only downside is tow capacity. But I don‘t own a big boat, and getting 30+mpg HWY makes up for it. Hoping to finally get a kayak this year and the subi will be perfect for it.

The 2015s look good. I wish my 2013 had the same lines on the body.

I wet waded in a pair of Keen sandals once. Never again! Keen makes great hiking boots, the sandals are good too, but for wet wading fly fishing they were horrible for me. They may work on gravel bottom tail waters, but for freestone or large stone streams they are dangerous. Go with boots for sure. I personally use waders year round and never get too hot. Just keep the waders around your waist instead of pulling them all the way up if you are worried about getting too hot.
If its too hot to wear waders, it may be too hot to be fishing for trout.

I was wondering. They didn’t look like Canon glass. Too bad they don’t accept filters, I use a CP and ND a lot when shooting.

I used to frequent a shop in Los Angeles that did a Thursday night fly tying night. Just before the shop closed for the day, locals could come by with their own materials and tools and tie, drink beer and shoot the shit. I’m sure if you didn’t bring your own tools, someone would let you sit down and tie at their station. I went a few times when I could make it. It was a good time and I learned some new patterns for surf fishing that produced very well for me.

Zach, I have to say, I love the authentic inquiring approach, showcasing a real quest to expand knowledge. You direct your questions with an educated mind that really wants to understand the thought or reason behind actions/approaches/etc. I have been listening to a few conventional fishing and fly fishing podcasts lately, and some of them are painful to get through. It’s almost as if some of the hosts do not understand the information the guest is giving. I enjoy how you analyze the info as it’s given and pry deeper into the answers to project a better understanding of the concepts at hand. Keep it up. I always hope the seasons last longer than they do. I realize it’s a lot of work to produce the series; I’m sure I don’t speak just for myself when I say that we appreciate your dedication to bringing this podcast to the listeners.

Its funny, I go back and forth on my compact 35mm cameras. I like shooting with them, but with the cost of use every time vs just taking a P&S digital or iPhone for snapshots, I find a reason to not take them out. I dont have anything great, but its nice to be able to have manual controls. Then of course I shoot and leave the rolls of film sitting around for months/years before developing it. I loved it when Target was doing one hour development only of rolls for 99¢. Then they started phasing out the chemical photo departments. Of course, sometimes the process of scanning can be tiresome.

As far as the Sony system… I’m not sure. Ive seen some great shots come from photographers using the NEX series of cameras. Again though, the price point of buying into a new system is my barrier of entry. My problem with the NEX is that it does not have a viewfinder. I dont like the idea of having to use a LCD screen as my viewfinder. One for battery use, and two because of delay. Optical viewfinders on rangefinders make sense and are a technology that has worked for many many years. Theres got to be a way to have that style viewfinder work in conjunction with zoom lenses to get the correct field of view.

David, Id love to see your review of the AW-1. Where could we find that?

Anyone tried the Panasonic Lumix GX-7?

I am out of the gear trends right now. Ive kind of become bored with a lot of what is going on in photography. It may be due to the over saturation of images these days. Don’t get me wrong, I still shoot and enjoy the process. And with my iPhone, I probably shoot more than ever. If I’m out to shoot landscapes, I carry my Mamiya RB and some rolls of film and my 20D or 30D and some lenses. But I dont have a serious camera that I like to carry with me no matter where I go. And that has lead me to only have a specific need for a camera.
I feel like the manufacturers are not paying attention to the pro market in the mirrorless arena. Could we please get a fully manual compact camera with a good range of lenses? Either dual wheels for shutter and aperture or put the aperture controls back on the lens. Combine that with a full frame sensor and a range of lenses that I can afford and I would be extremely happy. So far, the Fuji X-Pro1 is about the only thing Ive found that sparks my interest. But every time I look at the system, I get turned off by the cost. I guess the X-T1 falls into that same category but it looks like Id be approaching DSLR size again, and I might as well just upgrade to a 5D at that point.

I’m curious to see how the new Nikon 1 AW1 plays out. A waterproof camera with interchangable lenses looks extremely appealing. Just get me a wide angle lens with a dome on the front and I may have to put a balance on my credit card.

Thanks for the compliments. Video is a crazy rabbit hole to go down.

I’ve been working in television production/video production since ’99 and it’s one of those careers that there is always room to grow. There are always new programs to learn for post production, new tools for shooting and new techniques to attempt and maybe even master!
Having seen technology change over the years it amazes me what can be done on any budget level these days. There was a time when a quality video camera would cost no less than $5,000 on the lowest end of the spectrum. It’s an interesting time as the video market grows. With more people looking at more screens than ever, the opportunity to have an audience (for entertainment or marketing) is bigger than ever, though quite a bit more fragmented. I love that the world of fly fishing has embraced video as a way to showcase those shared experiences from around the world. There are so many talented film makers creating content that transports the viewer to the water. Even if you’ve never been to the filming locations or hooked into the showcased species, you’ve likely lived out those moments of perfect casts, missed rises, spooked fish and tight lines with one a special fish on the end.
At work, we refer to the young blood of fly fishing as the snowboarders of the fishing world, breathing excitement and energy into the sport, making fishing look cool to non anglers by leading the way through a new style of video content.
