It appears in that picture that is left arm has been bitten off by the tiger fish.

You could always convert to B&W in post! ;D

Seriously though, it could save you a lot of headaches trying to balance out the color cast from the lamps.

Maybe something like this would work. It may be a bit too contrasty and dramatic for the subject, but I was trying to make her pop out from the wall a bit.

    tim,
First thing I would do is bump up the ISO to get the shutter speed up to reduce motion blur. You’re not going to be able to get rid of the funky color cast without overpowering the lights with strobes. The lights appear to be the same that you find in gymnasiums. They change between a greenish hue to a orange/magenta hue. All the lamps aren’t on the same cycle so you get a mixture of color from the different lights.

I went on a test shoot with a phantom camera that shoots 1000fps connected to a DVCProHD deck. Very cool set up that requires two operators, one for the camera and one to work the computer and VTR on the recording end.
The shoot was to test for shooting the NCAA basketball tournament. Our test subjects was The Colorado 14ers, an NBA-D league team. We shot at 400fps and the results were pretty amazing. The only problem was that the lights in the arena weren’t designed for video, so there was a very apparent flicker to them and the LED banners around the seating.

Check out these videos on YouTube They were shot with the camera, but not the stuff we shot.

You can Blur your channels the same way to get some great feel to your photo. Select the background and just soften a channel.

Photoshop is a crazy tool and if you ever here someone say they are proficient in the program… they are probably only fishing dry flies (there is a whole nother world sub surface) I have been using Photoshop for right at 20 years now and It still makes me feel clueless about how to use it. But that is why I Fly fish and do Design.

    -kp

I’ve never really jumped into the world of editing the channels of my photos. Maybe a sharpening here or there, but thats about it. Most of the time I work with the channel mixer or curves and work on individual channels that way. Have you found that those tools work the same as doing the work within the channels pallet?

A few years ago, another editor was telling me about how every hip hop music video that goes through the doors at their post house usually gets a slight blur to the red channel in the online finishing room. This gives that slight cross process cyan look to it.

The tattoo idea was the first thing that came to mind but it looks like that wasn’t too original.
Its funny that I happened to catch this little brown up in Homestake Creek in Colorado a few years ago. I never thought the photo would come in handy, but it looks like I’ve lucked out.

Did you take a bite out of that brown’s tail to see if it really did taste like icing from a cake?

    Zach,
That is a great basic breakdown of cost per image. Of course there is a lot more that goes into some images other than gear and pushing a button. I know you know this, I just hope people don’t think that an image really only costs $0.50 to make. Yea sure some do, but most don’t.

    Zach

I’ve heard they taste nasty. I think the more important question is, will they take a fly?

There is a good article in the March/April issue of Digital Photo Pro Magazine called The New Economy.

DPP now has most if not all of its articles available online. The New Economy is available here.
Even though it is available online, I suggest buying this magazine. I have found it to be one of the few reputable professional magazines for the industry (PDN being the only other one that comes to mind).

In regards to the issues addressed in this article, I’ve often wondered why rates for web usage are so low. Some of the magazines with largest distribution have a circulation rate of 2mil. I think Field and Stream is 1.5mil circulation and around 9mil readers. With a website, you potentially have the ability to reach a lot more than that.
I work for an internet based TV network. I don’t know the most recent numbers, but we have over 4million unique visitors a month, and it maybe around 5mil or more now. However the advertising $ aren’t at the same level as they were for shows I worked on that were distributed over cable and satellite. The ratio of $ to viewer is a lot different in the two mediums, yet the over all difference in number of viewers isn’t much. With our programming being available live and on demand, we have increased the opportunity for advertisers reach viewers. Remember, I said 4-5mil unique visits a month, out of those uniques there are many return viewers. There is a change taking place though. Advertisers are now starting to recognize the internet as a viable outlet to spend their money.
Because of the large number of views for our work and the growing amount of $ advertisers are willing to spend on internet campaigns, I would think that the value of a photographer’s work should go up, not down. Yet web usage rights are sometimes under $100. Why is this? Do we think that because the photo is not in a tangible form that it is worth less? To me, it seems like there is less overhead (printing, distribution)for magazines to create online versions, therefore they have higher profits. I’m all for everyone making a profit. The better magazines or advertisers do, the better the photographic community should do. Lets just make sure that as professionals, we get our fair share.

My brother told me about this on Saturday (I usually don’t read the fishing threads on this board). I hate to hear the news. The Creel always seemed to be a helpful shop whenever I stopped in (maybe only 3 or 4 times). The first time I fished the Clinch they turned me on to some good flies that proved to bring in a fish or two. I never bought anything more than flies when I was in there, but they were always helpful and gave me as much attention as they would anyone else.
Same goes for LRO. Wonderful shop there. My first time fishing the Smokies they gave tips and helped with a fly selection. I actually still have some strung beads for tying I bought my first time there some 8 or 9 years ago.

This trend seems to be going on nation wide. My favorite shop in the Denver area closed due to competition from Bass Pro Shop and Sportsman’s Warehouse.

I’ve seen some snail flies using foam for the body/shell. take some 2mm foam, cut thin strips and then roll them into the shape of the shell. Then epoxy

My favorite thing to do in the winter is go and ride Keystone until the snow starts to suck or the runs get too crowded, then head down to the Blue and fish those same holes. I lost a huge (atleast 24″ I belive) cutbow while standing on an ice covered boulder one hole down from the spectator hole, known as The Big Gulp.
My biggest trout have come from the Blue. It makes me sick that I moved to LA, leaving that behind. Oh well I guess my new thing will be surfing/fishing trips.

I’m actually surprised as many magazines have survived as there are.
Really when you think about it there virtually no need at all to buy print anymore.
    🙁

I think the demand will always be there. There is something nice about having a good print magazine that you can keep around as a reference and can go back to re-read and it doesn’t get old.

This has turned into a well responded thread with a good discussion going. I’m glad I stared it!

    Thanks for the info Zach.
I’m actually not a pro in the photography world. I’ve worked in Television for a number of years, so I’m coming in from a video production background. That experience is what feeds in to my lighting and composition and what not. But for now, photography is mainly a hobby.
I’m somewhat familiar with the process of submitting examples and query letters to magazines through photo editors, though I actually haven’t done it myself. Right now I do not have a large enough portfolio of fly fishing related shots that I would feel comfortable submitting. Plus it seems like in guidelines from most magazines, they request you do not submit photos without a manuscript. I’m a horrible writer so that is out of the question.
As far as submitting and showing on a portfolio site, I do not watermark photos that go on my site. However, when put in a public forum or on flickr they do get watermarked with rather intrusive copyright info. Unfortunately that is something I feel like I need to do. When submitting a disc, I’d hope photo editors would know that as a photographer I’d require a license agreement and compensation for usage. And if they ran a photo without that, they’d get the standard 3x invoice for copyright infringement.
Building a stock archive is something I need to do. But first I need to shoot a lot more!

    Thanks.

Just remember, with fill flash you’ll have to accommodate changing light temps as the sun pops up over the horizon. With digital and fill flash, you could process your raw image separately for the foreground and for the background to get matching color temps. But at that point you’re using a work flow similar to HDR, which you said you didn’t want to do.

Don’t forget gradient filters for landscapes as well! You could easily drop the sky down a few stops and still expose the foreground properly.

I placed the flies on the back side of a Ganesha wall plaque a friend brought back from India. It was the only dark wood I could find in the house.

    Thats a risk I wouldn’t take!

If you’re looking for a critique, read on.

The 1st and 3rd photo confuse me. What is the focal point of the photo? What are you trying to show? The colors are beautiful, but I don’t see what the photos are about. The 1st one seems a bit soft. Personally I think I would have gone for a long exposure on this scene, but that would make it my photo and not yours! I think the 1st shot would work better as 2 separate images. One of the rocks and waves and the other as the logs and the horizon.
The 2nd photo is nice. I love the colors and that cold feeling. The foreground and trees around the shore are a bit too contrasty for my liking. Also, you have some dust specs that need to be cleaned up. Great shot, I just wish there was more detail and less black in the foreground.

You’re crazier than me for going out in -10 degree weather!
