The Itinerant AnglerThis is bad news:

Scott Rogers is a great American, and this was a great shop.
But I’ll tell you what really chapped me on this deal.

Bob RigginsMemberI too hate to see the small shops going under.

MemberAs much as I hate to say it, some shops deserve to go out of business.

Mike McKeownMemberThis is a sorry state… I love spending time at my local shop, and try and buy as much as I can there, where I get my advice…

Mark SchaferMemberIf I were as smart as all the people that give me advice on how to run my businesses I would never have done it.
I was going to weigh in on the above comments but the answers truly dwarf the questions.

MemberMy first fly rod, reel, flybox, selection of flies, and logo hat and shirt all came from the Creel in Knoxville.

Steve K.MemberI went in Moe’s Southwest Grill the other day and the employees on the serving line yell in unison, “WELCOME TO MOE”S!” I think it’s store policy. Maybe the flyshops could adopt this tactic.

MemberI don’t know how it is where you are but I can see the economy slowing in my area. This can’t bode well for Flyshops. Internet sales is probably killing shops too. People go try a rod at the shop and order it online with free shipping and avoid the sales tax.

Hah, that’s the exact reason why I have only been to Moe’s one time – that, and their chips sucked and my burrito was stone-cold…

MemberI believe the local fly shop in my area just closed down as well, or at least got bought by a bigger outfit.

Chad SimcoxMemberMy brother told me about this on Saturday (I usually don’t read the fishing threads on this board). I hate to hear the news. The Creel always seemed to be a helpful shop whenever I stopped in (maybe only 3 or 4 times). The first time I fished the Clinch they turned me on to some good flies that proved to bring in a fish or two. I never bought anything more than flies when I was in there, but they were always helpful and gave me as much attention as they would anyone else.
Same goes for LRO. Wonderful shop there. My first time fishing the Smokies they gave tips and helped with a fly selection. I actually still have some strung beads for tying I bought my first time there some 8 or 9 years ago. This trend seems to be going on nation wide. My favorite shop in the Denver area closed due to competition from Bass Pro Shop and Sportsman’s Warehouse.

MemberA couple of thougts.
1) the demise of local fly shops can be partially tied to the reduction in the number of folks fishing.
Why are there less people fishing?
