I moved to LA 3 weeks ago and haven’t done much shooting since I got here. I shouldn’t say that, I just haven’t done much personal shooting since I got here. (I did shoot some photos of a jam session with Moby and Dave Navarro at my work last week) But for personal stuff I haven’t had the time really. So last night, even though I was tired and wanted to go to bed, I made some time around midnight to shoot some flies.
These shots need some photoshop work to clean them up, but I really couldn’t dedicate time to that last night. The temp of light may not be accurate for depicting the colors of the fly, but I was going for a more nostalgic/memory type shot. The concept is less about the fly and more about the romanticized idea or memory of what kind of days these flies can bring. I used directional/low angle light to give a hint of the atmosphere of late afternoon light. Now I’m wondering if I should have gelled one strobe to be a little warmer than the other. These are my first salt water flies that will hopefully be seeing some surf sometime soon.

Oh, and sorry about the small size and big watermark. The photos are hosted on flickr, and it’s become a trolling field for free images by a lot of websites/companies.

    I like them Chad.
No need to appologise about the watermark one cant be too careful these days. I don’t worry too much about it myself, in my position I might consider it flattery but do know infringement is more common than most might think.

    Funny but true.
On another fly fishing site I frequent a wonderfully gifted “realistic” fly tier recently discovered a few images of some of his ties (1 was a caddis) had been ripped and used in a book that was published by some science hack as examples of the real things.

I like the industrial, almost gritty feel of the images, not something i am used to seeing in the fly fishing genre.

I placed the flies on the back side of a Ganesha wall plaque a friend brought back from India. It was the only dark wood I could find in the house.
