Chad SimcoxMemberWhat are the going rates for stock photos for something like this from an amateur photographer (me)?
It doesn’t matter what your level of expertise is really. If it’s a good photo, then it’s a good photo. Just because you don’t shoot full time doesn’t mean your shot is any less valuable.
The price guideline I mentioned in my previous post is for stock in this case. If you’re doing an assignment for a project like this there are many more factors like creative fees that go in to the overall pricing for the series of shots. At that point, the per-image price will become lower but the over all pricehttp://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMember$3.79 for a gallon of gas?!?! Where??? It’s really sad that sounds inexpensive to me. I think I paid $4.15/gal for 85 octane the other day. I don’t go fishing anymore, I have to drive too far to get to less than ideal trout water.

Chad SimcoxMemberHaving a photo printed in a brochure for a manufacturer is a commercial job. Trading for gear is often seen as a way for companies to get photos at a much lower cost than actually paying for them. A lot of Action Sports companies are bad about doing this and a lot of photographers are wising up to the tactics. Here’s the truth, gear doesn’t pay the bills.
Here is some more insight, the cost of a photo running 1/4 page in a brochure with a circulation of 50k would typically cost between $350-500. That’s on the low end. Now I’m not telling you what to charge but take rates like that in to consideration of what the typical cost would be for a company. This is a photo selling their product (just because it’s not a product shot doesn’t mean you’re not selling it). Figure out what is best for you, and best for the company and reach an agreement for what is fair for both you and your customer.
If you do trade for product, make sure you’re being compensated fairly. MSRP does not = cost to the company!http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberI have been loosely keeping an eye on drobo units for the past year. I’m very interested in them, but the lack of firewire is holding me back from dropping the money on one. That and that I’d need to buy drives for it now.

Chad SimcoxMemberThere was an article in Digital Photo Pro about a year ago that was about archiving solutions for the digital age. They included multiple hard drive back ups, multiple DVD back ups (one kept in a light tight safe), and online archival/storage services.

Chad SimcoxMemberI’m not saying that it could be seen that way or that most people won’t see it that way. The spot is as much about branding Canon as it is the XSI. *Oh and earlier I meant to say there isn’t a voice over saying this was shot with the XSI.
It always comes down to Caveat Emptor… do your research before you buy.
Watching the spot again, I’m looking at the lighting on the last sequence. I’m pretty sure that isn’t normal stadium lighting. I’ve got a feeling that those photos were shot at a lower ISO and the scene was lit with a number of high wattage HMI lights. The lighting ratios are nice, and the light looks kind of low for stadium lighting.
If you’re interested in the info, here is part of the team that it took to create this spot (I omitted alot of the producer and supervisor credits):

Chad SimcoxMemberI don’t understand the issue with the commercial. They’re selling a feeling or an idea of the ability to take photographs of any possible moment of life that you experience. There is a V.O. saying that with the XSI you can capture these images. Just think back to the old Rebel commercials with Agassi playing. There were probably still frames in there that we’re shot on the 35mm motion picture film camera and held as a freeze frame. Would that misleading as well?
To be honest, I’m really surprised to hear that this was shot with a still camera instead of HD or 35mm. That must have been a pain in the you know what to edit and composite. With all the rounds of revisions that client’s usually come back with… yikes, I feel for the post team on that one!http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberA bit off topic, but Zach I wanted to tell you that those two images make me homesick for two different places. The first for Tennessee, it reminds me of a place on the Caney Fork and the beautiful foliage on all the streams. And the second really reminds me of a few places in Colorado.
Alas, I’m stuck here in the urban circus known as Hollywood with no great rivers close enough to justify make an afternoon jaunt to with gas being $4.20/gal.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberFlat Light is great for Black and White photography. Also, when shooting color in flat light, I will sometimes over expose by a stop to try and help get some pop into my colors. You usually have to compromise with blown out highlights or lack of detail in darker areas with little to no color saturation. A lot of times, a gradient filter will be needed to keep detail (if there is any) or exposure down in the sky.

Chad SimcoxMemberI’ve carried my 20D around my neck under my waders tucked behind my back, but it’s uncomfortable. I have a William Joseph Creel pack and I put my camera in there inside a dry bag sometimes as well. I’m thinking of buying a waterproof Olympus P&S to carry on the stream instead of my SLR. But with my work schedule, I won’t have a day on the water for a few months I think. Ahh if only I was paid overtime, these 60+ hour weeks would seem justifiable.

Chad SimcoxMemberI think this shot would be more successful with a better background. As it is now, the snowy background is boring and doesn’t make me recognize that someone was actually fishing in those conditions. The photo is more about the temps/weather than the act of fishing in the temps/weather. I think a darker background of the stream/river would be much more interesting. I love the sunrise reflection in the epoxy over the rod wraps. Makes me miss fishing in Colorado during the winter.

Chad SimcoxMemberI like Radiant Vista, but I got kind of burned out on them. Too long and too monotone.
Check out the Light Source podcasts, if you skip past the almost commercial like tech talk at the beginning, you can get to some really really good interviews. They’ve interviewed some of my favorite photographers (Jeremy Cowart, Chase Jarvis, Lionel Deluy, Patrick Hoelck, Michael Muller, etc.). The get beyond toy talk and into thought process, work flow, influence and style. Really good stuff.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberJohn, I might take you up on that.
By the way, I like your photos from your smokies trip. Those streams are some of my favorite places to fish. I swear no place is more beautiful than the southern Appalachians in autumn (and I say this after living in Colorado for 4 years).http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.
